A view of the entrance to Longwood, once the final residence of the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte. Perry's squadron called at St. Helena in January, 1853 the crew visiting Longwood " In viewing the miserable building, where for more than five years, this extraordinary man resided. it is difficult to suppress a deep feeling of the instability of earthly glory." (Narrative, Volume 1).

Tinted lithograph 15.3 x 22.4 cm, 22.4 x 28.6 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner stained, lower edge creased and a little ragged, but the image in very good condition. A view from "from Nature" by Wilhelm Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the… Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Madeira was the first stop for Perry's expedition after embarking on his first visit to Japan: the squadron appearing as dots on the distant harbour. There they re-fuelled and re-provisioned, this serene and charming scene captured by the Wiliam Heine the expedition's artist. Perry's squadron is depicted at anchor in the background.

The expedition's artist William Heine, is depicted in the middle picture. Madeira was the first stop for Perry's expedition after embarking on his first visit to Japan: the squadron appearing as dots on the distant harbour. Tinted lithograph 23 x 16.5 cm, 28.6 x 22.7 cm (sheet), small stain to the lower corner and inner margin creased, but in very good condition. A handsome portrait after a daguerrotype and drawing by Eliphalet Brown of the Regent of Lew Chew and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to… the China Seas and Japan.". At the time of Perry's visit in May 1853, the King was too young (12 years old) to receive the Perry party they met with the Regent, "a venerable old man". ("Narrative").

The expedition visited the then… independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879.

23x16 cm. Uncolored map printed on thick paper. Good to very good condition with some soiling in margins and light stains, two short tears at edges. There is no clear evidence that this was removed from a larger volume, but that is certainly possible. Shows the island of Formosa (Taiwan), with detail mostly along the coastline.…Ackerman's address is shown as 379 Broadway, New York, where James Ackerman operated a lithographic shop from1851 to 1855. See Peters (America on Stone) p.72.

A pair of views drawn on the spot, " From nature" by Wilhel…m Heine, with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Heine and Brown, the artists, may be seen conferring in the middle ground of one view.The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about these views: ?Picturesque crags studded the hillside?Over it towered a tall crag, rent through the centre and surmounted with a square rock, like a ruined tower [and] on a spot commanding a fine view of the bay, [we] found a handsome Cunq-qua, in an enclosure planted with trees. A dignitary of some kind welcomed us, and we were plied with small cups of excellent tea?.
