Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book features a debate on currency regulation between the author, a monetary critic, and Lord Overstone, a strong supporter of the Bank Act of 1844. The author argues that the Act, founded on the principle of regulating Britain's currency by the foreign exchange market, has caused immense damage and impoverishment through its creation of repeated crises and panics, such as those of 1847 and 1857. The author contrasts this with Overstone's belief that the system brings economic prosperity, pointing out Britain's immense economic growth during this period was driven by gold discoveries, free trade, and the railway system, not the Bank Act. This insightful book concludes that a steady and equable currency should not be regulated against the tides of other countries' currencies, and that the price of gold, the basis of Britain's currency, should be regulated instead. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book from the 18th century offers a fundamental introduction to Conchology, the study of the natural history of seashells. Written as a primer for those wishing to learn more about the subject, it was the first of its kind. The author, an expert naturalist, provides assistance to those who desire knowledge of shells but may not possess extensive prior knowledge of natural history. The book stands as a foundational work that sparked significant advancements in the field of Conchology. By refining and formalizing the classification of shells, the author laid the groundwork for future scientists to build upon, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of marine biology and the diverse species that inhabit our oceans. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Añadir al carritoFull-Leather. Condición: Good. Samuel Brookes Ilustrador. 1st Edition. A good copy of the 1st edition of this extremely rare work, with 11 plates, 9 of which are hand coloured. Brookes set out to write for those who wanted to understand Conchology, but who might not have a grounding in natural history. He took care to use english rather than latin names where possible, and to give readers a clear framework for their study. This copy is in a later speckled calf binding with gilt lining and blind stamped decoration to the board edges. The spine has raised bands with gilt lining and gilt stamped decoration. There is a leather title. It is in near fine condition. Page edges are marbled. There is an inked owners name to a preliminary - J Reid Moir. 3rd November 1919 - possibly the Reid Moir who authored 'Antiquity of Man in East Anglia'. The title page has browning and some spotting and an ink mark. The text pages vary between very clean and bright (the majority) to occasional foxing and spotting, to quite heavy foxing in the margins (a section p 71- circa p 90 - affecting margin but not text itself). The plate paper is slightly brown toned but the plates are generally clean and the hand colouring is beautifully done. Each plate has a protective guard.
