Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. An illuminating study of the architecture of one of the 20th centurys most important tropical modernistsVladimir Ossipoff (19071998), known as the master of Hawaiian architecture, was at the forefront of the postwar phenomenon known as tropical modernism. Although he practiced at a time of rapid growth and social change in Hawai`i, Ossipoff criticized large-scale development and advocated environmentally sensitive designs, developing a distinctive form of architecture appropriate to the lush topography, microclimates, and vernacular traditions of the Hawaiian islands. This stunning book, now available for the first time in paperback, surveys Ossipoffs buildings, which demonstrate a striking interplay of indoor and outdoor space, as well as a vibrant and glamorous architectural style that has proven delightfully particular to its place and durable over time.Published in association with the Honolulu Museum of ArtExhibition Schedule:Honolulu Academy of Arts, Hawaii (November 29, 2007 January 27, 2008)Yale School of Architecture, New Haven (Fall 2008)Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt (Spring 2009) Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. The evolution of modern architecture has been inextricably entangled in issues of politics, nationalism, and the environment, creating a tension between local context and global development that is unresolved to this day. In this context, few writers have exerted as much influence on architectural theory and practice as Kenneth Frampton. In this illustrated volume, twenty-nine contributors from around the world amplify and pay tribute to his writing and thought. Intended for all those concerned with the built environment, this book offers further evidence of how this scholar, humanist, and teacher has shaped our understanding of the working reality of the architect. The premise of Modern Architecture and the Lifeworld is rooted in Frampton's understanding of how architecture must engage with both cultural and constructional imperatives; and it addresses strategies for grappling with contemporary concerns such as regional identity amidst urban globalization, and tectonic culture and landform in the construction of place.Supported by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

Añadir al carritoTrade Paperback. Condición: New. Completed in 2008, the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California, is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings of recent times. Its design, by Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), combines the early Christian symbol of the fish with an innovative structure made of glass, wood and concrete. A glazed, bivalve exterior envelops the building, while a layer of fritted glass diffuses light and heat. Inside, the vaulted wooden ceiling soars 130 feet upwards, where an oculus opens out to the sky. The unique Omega window behind the altar was created with the help of new technology developed specifically for the cathedral: an image of the Romanesque relief of Christ from the tympanum of Chartres Cathedral was digitized and rendered as laser-perforated holes in an aluminum panel, creating a 60-foot pixilated image. With 150 color reproductions, this volume examines Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's masterpiece.
