Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: Near Fine. First Edition (?). Pages are clean and tight; this is a NEW book; still in publisher's shrink wrap. Extensively illustrated with 100+ color and b/w pictures. Evelyn was born in New York in 1911, the daughter of well-to-do aesthetes. Her parents had been traveling to Europe and around the USA for years before her birth, and they took their children with them, as they continued to visit museums and enhance their already extensive art collection. She was educated at the Horace Mann high school, a place noted for its rigorous, demanding and progressive curriculum, where she excelled. From there she entered Vassar College in 1928, and from there, with some ups and downs due to the vicissitudes of the stock market and the Great Depression, she continued her globetrotting life, always living in the best circles. She'd run into the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in an elevator, and so forth. Fascinating biography of a woman who lived her life with great zest. Oversized, 4#. ; Photographs; 9 1/4 x 11 1/2; 263 pages; Very slight bumping.

Eugène Boban began life in humble circumstances in Paris, traveled to the California Gold Rush, and later became a recognized authority on pre-Columbian cultures. He also invented an entire category of archaeological artifact: the Aztec crystal skull. By his own admission, he successfully "palmed off" a number of these crystal skulls on the curators of Europe's leading museums. How could that happen, and who was this man? Detailed are the travels, self-education, and archaeological explorations of Eugène Boban; this book also explores the circumstances that allowed him to sell fakes to museums that would remain undetected for over a century.

'Artist Evelyn Metzger always travelled first class through the East Coast and around the world: this title covers both her social life and her artistic appreciation and contributions, examining her formal studies of art history at Vassar, her flexibility and travels, and her portraits. Plenty of black and white and color illustrations accompany a strong survey of her life and times.' -- Midwest Book Review Open copy, light to mild wear, inscribed by author/artist to previous owner on inner front cover, clean pages inside.
