Publisher's cloth and dust jackets (dj slightly frayed at extremities and rubbed). Karol Borsuk (1905-1982) was a notable Polish mathematician renowned for his contributions to topology, alongside significant results in functional analysis. His profound ideas and the depth of the problems he tackled served as a wellspring of inspiration for research both in Poland and abroad for decades. This selection of his works, curated by the author in 1980, comprises the most significant papers reflecting Borsuk's diverse interests. The topics covered include Cartesian and symmetric products, extending maps, fixed and antipodal points, functional spaces and their applications, metric properties, polyhedra, spaces satisfying special conditions, the theory of position, retracts, and the theory of shape. Preceding the papers is a biographical article providing insights into Borsuk's life, a comprehensive survey of his scientific contributions, and a complete list of his publications.…

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good-. 1st Edition. Cloth hardcover, French & Polish with some German, 319 pages, NOT ex-library. No ISBN. Essential mathematical and philosophical papers of Zygmunt Janiszewski (1888-1920), a foundational figure of the Polish School of Mathematics and the visionary founder of the journal Fundamenta Mathematicae. -- This volume collects the chosen works of Zygmunt Janiszewski , organized into two main sections. The first part contains his core mathematical papers, including his doctoral thesis on irreducible continua between two points, along with seminal works on general plane curves, Cantorian lines, cuts of the plane, and a collaborative paper with Kuratowski on indecomposable continua. The second part reveals his contributions to didactics and philosophy, with writings on the nature of topology and on realism and idealism in mathematics. Crucially, this edition provides French translations of works originally published only in Polish, making his complete thought accessible to a wider international audience for the first time. -- This is a vital historical document on the genesis of the Warsaw School of Mathematics. Janiszewski's foundational research on continuum theory and the topology of the plane, including theorems that still bear his name, remains fundamental to the field. The inclusion of his philosophical writings provides rare insight into the intellectual currents that shaped modern topology, making this an indispensable primary source for topologists, historians of mathematics, and anyone studying the formation of major scientific schools in the 20th century. -- "Janiszewski's life was cut short by the influenza pandemic of 1918-19, at Lwow [Lviv], on 3 January 1920, at age 31. He willed his body for medical research, and his cranium for craniological study, desiring to be 'useful after his death'." …

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Scarce oversized cloth hardcover, li [51] + 609 pages, NOT ex-library. Primarily in French (40 papers), 8 papers in English, 1 in German. No dust jacket. -- This volume presents a curated collection of the most significant research papers by Kazimierz Kuratowski, a leading figure of the Warsaw School of Mathematics and one of the 20th century's most influential topologists. The selected works showcase his foundational contributions to the fields of point-set topology and descriptive set theory. The papers cover his key results, including his work on the closure axioms, the Kuratowski-Zorn lemma, and the characterization of planar graphs (Kuratowski's theorem). Edited by his renowned students Karol Borsuk and Ryszard Engelking, this volume serves as an essential resource, making the seminal works of a mathematical master accessible to researchers and students in topology and the foundations of mathematics. -- Kazimierz Kuratowski (1896-1980) was a Polish mathematician and logician. He was one of the leading representatives of the Warsaw School of Mathematics. His main contributions to mathematics include: - a characterization of Hausdorff spaces which are now called Kuratowski closure axioms; - proof of the Kuratowski-Zorn lemma; - in graph theory, the characterization of planar graphs now known as Kuratowski's theorem; - identification of the ordered pair (x,y) with the set {{x},{x,y}}; - introduction of the Tarski-Kuratowski algorithm; - Kuratowski's closure-complement problem; - Kuratowski's free set theorem; - Kuratowski convergence of subsets of metric spaces; - the Kuratowski, Ryll-Nardzewski measurable selection theorem; Kuratowski's post-war works were mainly focused on three strands: development of homotopy in continuous functions; construction of connected space theory in higher dimensions; uniform depiction of cutting Euclidean spaces by any of its subsets, based on the properties of continuous transformations of these sets.…
