Essential mathematical and philosophical papers of Zygmunt Janiszewski (1888-1920), a foundational figure of the Polish School of Mathematics and the visionary founder of the journal Fundamenta Mathematicae. -- This volume collects the chosen works of Zygmunt Janiszewski , organized into two main sections. The first part contains his core mathematical papers, including his doctoral thesis on irreducible continua between two points, along with seminal works on general plane curves, Cantorian lines, cuts of the plane, and a collaborative paper with Kuratowski on indecomposable continua. The second part reveals his contributions to didactics and philosophy, with writings on the nature of topology and on realism and idealism in mathematics. Crucially, this edition provides French translations of works originally published only in Polish, making his complete thought accessible to a wider international audience for the first time. -- This is a vital historical document on the genesis of the Warsaw School of Mathematics. Janiszewski's foundational research on continuum theory and the topology of the plane, including theorems that still bear his name, remains fundamental to the field. The inclusion of his philosophical writings provides rare insight into the intellectual currents that shaped modern topology, making this an indispensable primary source for topologists, historians of mathematics, and anyone studying the formation of major scientific schools in the 20th century. -- "Janiszewski's life was cut short by the influenza pandemic of 1918-19, at Lwow [Lviv], on 3 January 1920, at age 31. He willed his body for medical research, and his cranium for craniological study, desiring to be 'useful after his death'." …
