This study shows how African American narrative traditions merge with certain linguistic, prosodic, metaphorical, and rhetorical strategies to create a sense of immediacy of the spoken word and a communal experience between protagonists and readers. - Literary scholars and audiences alike have long since recognized the unique contribution of African American female authors to the language of American fiction. This study analyzes the ways in which revised notions of gender and 'Black English Vernacular' traditions such as 'the Dozens', testifying, or the blues form the crucible that generates such fresh figurative language and stylistic innovation. As the protagonists in Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God", Toni Morrison's "Sula", and Alice Walker's "The Color Purple" move towards increasing autonomy and creative self-expression in different media, their progress transforms the narrative voice as well as their own. Even where their 'Bildung' is complete, it is not the happy ending (which harbors its own ironies) but the dialogic vitality of the narrative language that stands as its most enduring legacy, engaging the reader in a form of 'call and response' which resembles the characters' interaction. Where communal oral traditions and the protagonist's aspirations cannot be reconciled, as in Sula's case, her voice continues to haunt the text. Investigating the linguistic, prosodic, metaphorical, and rhetorical strategies employed to evoke the immediacy of the spoken word, this study finally suggests that the 'free direct discourse' of "The Color Purple" may be an original mode of representing speech, a new technique for recording language surviving in silence. Edited by Eva Boesenberg, Reinhard Isensee and Martin Klepper. 21 essays analyse interrelations between financial and cultural capital in different historical contexts and from a variety of perspectives, structured by four topic areas: I. Economics, Culture, and Theory; II. Economics and Politics; III. Health and Political Economy; IV. Economies of Literature. The volume is based on the annual conference of the German Association for American Studies/Deutsche Gesellschaft für Amerikastudien (GAAS/DGfA), May 2010. - American economies are hotly and controversially debated both within the United States and abroad. While most discussions focus exclusively on financial resources, this volume takes a more comprehensive approach, analysing interrelations between financial and cultural capital in different historical contexts and from a variety of perspectives. It addresses the 2008 financial crisis as well as representations of economics in literary texts and films, the usage of metaphors in economic theory, opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogues between economics and cultural studies, and the complex intersections of economics and aesthetics. Topics discussed range from piratical economies in 17th century literature to ecology and economics in recent movies, gentrification, and economics and health. With its readings of financial, narrative, libidinal and visual economies, the collection offers a broad spectrum of critical engagements with American economies both past and present. The study examines narrative constructions around money and gender in terms of motifs and style, shows how literary representations relate to real-world socio-economics and asks to what extent women's control over resources may modify conventional gender discourses. - Perhaps because money is frequently considered gender-neutral, studies of the nexus between financial resources, masculinities, and femininities in fiction have been rare. Yet, economics are a key aspect of gender constructions; conversely, the language of money is thoroughly gendered. This study traces the representation of these interrelations in U.S.-American literature between 1850 and 2000. After historicizing the topic, it analyzes 35 novels with a focus on sexuo-economic relations that are more flexible and less hierarchical than hegemonic constructions. It simultaneously addresses the relationship between financial and cultural capital in terms of subject matter as well as style. Attempting to reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of U.S.-American literature, the text chronicles the gradual revision of the ideology of separate spheres in which making money was an exclusively male task, while also documenting its tenacity at least in contemporary masculinity constructions.
