Brown blind stamped cloth boards with gold lettering and gold embellishments on spine. Book is gently used with some minor wear. Pages have foxing. Previous owners' name and ink stamp on front free endpaper. Sabbath School Library plate on front paste down endpaper. Tightly bound copy with clean interior having no markings, writing, underlining, or highlighting in margins or text block. SCARCE. Thomas Sherlock (1678-1761) was an Anglican Bishop of London. He is noted in church history as an important contributor to Christian apologetics. Since the Deist controversy Sherlock's argument for the evidences of the resurrection of Jesus Christ has continued to interest later Christian apologists such as William Lane Craig and John Warwick Montgomery. His place in the history of apologetics has been classified by Ross Clifford as belonging to the legal or juridical school of Christian apologetics. Inv. # 11219.

FEP has a small paste-down bookplate for Belle Vue, one of the great old plantations in Halifax County, Virginia, that is still in use. This work was first published anonymously but actually the work of Thomas Sherlock, a member of the Privy council who served as an Anglican bishop for 33 years. This work was first published in 1729 in response to Thomas Woolston's 'Discourses on the Miracles', and soon ran to fourteen editions. This is the only copy of this imprint on Web when listed. Internally the pages are generally bright with some occasional spotting, particularly to the plates. The binding is firm with the boards and all internal pages attached, although the front hinge is starting. There is some staining to the frontis and title page.
