Human dignity means existing for ones own good (the common good as well as ones individual good), and not as a mere means… to an alien good. But what is the true human good? This question is answered with a careful analysis of Aristotles definition of happiness. The natural law can then be understood as the precepts that guide us in achieving happiness. To show that human dignity is a reality in the nature of things and not a mere human invention, it is necessary to show that human beings exist by nature for the achievement of the properly human good in which happiness is found. This implies finality in nature. Since contemporary natural science does not recognize final causality, the book explains why living things, as least, must exist for a purpose and why the scientific method, as currently understood, is not able to deal with this question. These reflections will also enable us to respond to a common criticism of natural law theory: that it attempts to derive statements of what ought to be from statements about what is. After defining the natural law and relating it to human or positive law, Richard Berquist considers Aquinass formulation of the first principle of the natural law. He then discusses the commandments to love God above all things and to love ones neighbor as oneself as the first precepts of the natural law. Subsequent chapters are devoted to clarifying and defending natural law precepts concerned with the life issues, with sexual morality and marriage, and with fundamental natural rights. From Human Dignity to Natural Law concludes with a discussion of alternatives to the natural law. Menschenwürde bedeutet, um des eigenen Wohl…es willen zu existieren (sowohl des Gemeinwohls als auch des individuellen Wohls), und nicht als bloßes Mittel für ein fremdes Gut. Was aber ist das wahre menschliche Gut Diese Frage wird durch eine sorgfältige Analyse von Aristoteles' Definition des Glücks beantwortet. Das Naturrecht kann dann als die Regeln verstanden werden, die uns bei der Erreichung des Glücks leiten. Um zu zeigen, dass die Menschenwürde eine Realität in der Natur der Dinge ist und keine bloße menschliche Erfindung, ist es notwendig zu zeigen, dass der Mensch von Natur aus für die Erreichung des wahren menschlichen Gutes existiert, in dem das Glück zu finden ist. Dies setzt die Finalität der Natur voraus. Da die heutige Naturwissenschaft keine endgültige Kausalität anerkennt, erklärt das Buch, warum zumindest die Lebewesen zu einem bestimmten Zweck existieren müssen und warum die wissenschaftliche Methode, so wie sie derzeit verstanden wird, nicht in der Lage ist, diese Frage zu beantworten. Diese Überlegungen werden uns auch in die Lage versetzen, auf eine gängige Kritik an der Naturrechtstheorie zu reagieren: dass sie versucht, aus Aussagen über das, was ist, Aussagen über das, was sein sollte, abzuleiten. Nachdem Richard Berquist das Naturrecht definiert und in Beziehung zum menschlichen oder positiven Recht gesetzt hat, betrachtet er Thomas von Aquins Formulierung des ersten Grundsatzes des Naturrechts. Anschließend werden die Liebesgebote, Gott über alles zu lieben und den Nächsten wie sich selbst zu lieben, als die ersten Gebote des Naturrechts erörtert. Da die heutige Naturwissenschaft keine endgültige Kausalität anerkennt, erklärt das Buch, warum zumindest die Lebewesen zu einem bestimmten Zweck existieren müssen und warum die wissenschaftliche Methode, so wie sie derzeit verstanden wird, nicht in der Lage ist, diese Frage zu beantworten. Diese Überlegungen werden uns auch in die Lage versetzen, auf eine gängige Kritik an der Naturrechtstheorie zu reagieren: dass sie versucht, aus Aussagen über das, was ist, Aussagen über das, was sein sollte, abzuleiten. Nachdem Richard Berquist das Naturrecht definiert und in Beziehung zum menschlichen oder positiven Recht gesetzt hat, betrachtet er Thomas von Aquins Formulierung des ersten Grundsatzes des Naturrechts. Anschließend werden die Liebesgebote, Gott über alles zu lieben und den Nächsten wie sich selbst zu lieben, als die ersten Gebote des Naturrechts erörtert. Die anschließenden Kapitel sind der Klärung und Verteidigung der naturrechtlichen Gebote gewidmet, die sich mit den Fragen des Lebens, der Sexualmoral und der Ehe sowie den natürlichen Grundrechten befassen.
