La stesura dell'inventario del fondo dell'Archivio notarile di Monterotondo, conservato presso l'Archivio di Stato di Roma, ha permesso di individuare in modo imprevisto, all'interno di protocolli notarili, i due inventari dei beni del Palazzo qui pubblicati per la prima volta.Alcuni, invece, erano già noti attraverso le citazioni del fondamentale lavoro di P. N. Pagliara oppure nella trascrizione a cura del Centro Regionale di Documentazione o ancora nella parziale edizione di M. Aronberg-Lavin incentrata sulle opere d'arte. Si propongono ora nove inventari completi compresi tra il 1636 e il 1868 non privi di elementi sorprendenti come i 216 quadri che elencano. La funzione che gli oggetti dovevano ricoprire, sia pure intesi nell'accezione precisa di "bene", doveva essere importante se ha determinato il proliferare di elenchi e istrumenti notarili che li fissano, restituendone parte del significato. Il rapporto tra l'uomo del passato e l'oggetto era più significativo di quello del contemporaneo espresso attraverso il consumo, che ne condiziona utilizzo e possesso, per cui la "dignità legale" del bene si restringe al solo oggetto di valore, mentre, nel Seicento e nei secoli successivi, gli elenchi presentano oggetti che per noi sarebbero assolutamente trascurabili. Il loro passaggio da un individuo all'altro implicava il perdurare del significato simbolico dell'appartenenza, confermata negli anni e quindi potenziata nel valore. Il senso di questa proiezione temporale si coglie nel Palazzo di Monterotondo quando certi oggetti si ritrovano nello stesso posto pur nella rovina cui sono arrivati. Le figure di coloro che li hanno posseduti sono state delineate nella loro concretezza umana e istituzionale: Orsini, Barberini, Grillo, Borromeo-Arese, fino ai Boncompagni-Ludovisi. Ne deriva un'evidenza del feudo e del Palazzo all'interno del quadro storico generale, con un rilievo a tuttotondo che li trae da quel cono d'ombra nel quale erano scivolati. Il cambiamento, che nel corso dei secoli l'edificio andrà assumendo, lo porterà da simbolo del potere baronale degli Orsini, per cui era stato edificato nel medioevo, a sede dell'amministrazione municipale. Un percorso lungo col quale ha attraversato la splendida stagione del barocco romano, come luogo privilegiato della famiglia Barberini, il XVIII secolo dei ricchi genovesi Grillo, declinando poi velocemente con i Boncompagni-Ludovisi verso un utilizzo in cui non erano più necessari gli apparati, per arrivare ad acquisire la sobrietà della piena valenza di Palazzo civico.
