Hardback. Condición: Good. Cecil Beaton was one of the great twentieth-century tastemakers. A photographer, artist, writer and designer for more than fifty years, he was at the center of the worlds of fashion, society, theater and film. The Unexpurgated Beaton brings together for the first time the never-before-published diaries from 1970 to 1980 and, unlike the six slim volumes of diaries published during his lifetime, these have been left uniquely unedited. Hugo Vickers, the executor of Beaton's estate and the author of his acclaimed biography, has added extensive and fascinating notes that are as lively as the diary entries themselves. As one London reviewer wrote, Vickers' waspish footnotes are the salt on the side of the dish. Beaton treated his other published diaries like his photographs, endlessly retouching them, but, for this volume, Vickers went back to the original manuscripts to find the unedited diaries. Here is the photographer for British and American Vogue, designer of the sets and costumes for the play and film My Fair Lady and the film Gigi, with a cast of characters from many worlds: Bianca Jagger, Greta Garbo, David Hockney, Truman Capote, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, Mae West, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Rose Kennedy and assorted Rothschilds, Phippses and Wrightsmans; in New York, San Francisco, Palm Beach, Rio and Greece, on the Amalfi coast; at shooting parties in the English countryside, on yachts, at garden parties at Buckingham Palace, at costume balls in Venice, Paris or London. Beaton had started as an outsider and developed the power to observe, first with his nose pressed up against the glass, and then later from within inner circles. Vickers has said, his eagle eye missed nothing, and his diaries are intuitive, malicious (he took a relish in hating certain figures), praising and awestruck. Truman Capote once said the camera will never be invented that could capture or encompass all that he actually sees. The Unexpurgated Beaton is a book that is not only a great read and wicked fun but a timeless chronicle of our age.…

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, WITHOUT DEDICATION, IN BLACK PEN, ON TITLE PAGE. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, top corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (price on back jacket £25.00), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 286pp, illustrated. For nearly half a century Sir Roy Strong has enjoyed a high public profile in the arts world in Britain. Yet remarkably little is known about his life before the Swinging Sixties when he burst upon the scene as the revolutionary trendy young director of the National Portrait Gallery, aged thirty one. In this book he recounts for the first time the story of his social origins and the roots of his lifelong passion for the culture and history of England. He describes his childhood home in a suburban North London terrace, revealing himself to have been a shy solitary child of melancholy temperament, painting Elizabethan miniatures and Shakespearean set designs in his teens. It follows him through grammar school and university, where together with a generation of postwar 'meritocrats' like A.S. Byatt and Alan Bennett, his passion for learning was awakened and nourished. We catch glimpses of seminal experiences, such as his first outings to the theatre, opera and ballet, and his first trip abroad to Italy, which was to have a lasting influence on his sensibilities. He explores key, sometimes painful relationships with his family, his school teacher with whom he had a lifelong correspondence, and his debt to such people as C.V. Wedgwood, A.L. Rowse, Frances Yates and Cecil Beaton. In it we glimpse a vanished world dominated by class and hierarchy up which he climbed. As a backdrop we have the transformation of London from the drab, postwar world of the 1950s to the epicentre of fashion in the 1960s, and the development of Sir Roy's distinctive sartorial style, inspired by the burgeoning shops on Carnaby Street. Richly illustrated with drawings, letters, photographs and other archival material, this is an honest and compelling portrait of a young man about to step into the limelight of the British cultural scene he helped to modernize and in which he played a leading role. Scarce signed. Jacket photo after Cecil Beaton (ilustrador). Signed by Author(s).…

Softcover. Condición: g to vg. First edition. Quarto. Unpaginated. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over pink wrappers. Frontispiece portrait of Cecil Beaton. Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) is one of the most celebrated British portrait photographers of the 20th Century and is renowned for his images of elegance, glamour and style. His influence on portrait photography was profound and lives on today in the work of many contemporary photographers including David Bailey and Mario Testino. "Beaton Portraits" was published on the occasion of Sir Roy Strong's ground-breaking exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 1968. This volume brings together 36 portraits from the five remarkable decades of Beaton's career, including iconic images as well as those never seen before. Beaton captures 50 years of fashion, art and celebrity, from Dame Edith Sitwell in the 1920s to W. H. Auden in 1967. Includes portraits of Churchill, Queen Elizabeth, Nureyev, etc. Moderate rubbing along edges of dust-jacket. DJ in overall good- to good, wrappers and interior in very good condition.…

Condición: Very Good. [1931]. Privately published by The Dorchester Hotel. [London]. [1931]. Hardback, quarto; boards bound in a zig-zag patterned cloth, pictorial title-label pasted to front board, matching zig-zag endpapers. 49 pages. Text illustrations by Beaton, including 2 full-page, 4 half-page and 1 decorative initial; 4 double-page hors texte colour plates and 3 full-page advertisements. English. 260x210mm. 0.5kg. Very good; light shelf wear, occasional light surface mark to cloth, fading to spine; stitching beginning to pull in a couple of places as is common with this book, occasional light spotting. A Young Man Comes to London is a charming promotional book privately published by The Dorchester Hotel in London to celebrate its opening in 1931. It contains a short story by Michael Arlen, illustrated with line drawings by Cecil Beaton. Arlen's story is a satirical romance involving two Bright Young Things on the make. Arlen himself was a figure of London society and his story, complemented by Beaton's illustrations, perfectly captures the mix of flightiness and bravado of the young 1920s set. The second-half of the book is devoted to the building and interiors of the new Dorchester. The Hotel's developers Sir Francis Towle and Sir Malcolm McAlpine provide 'A Brief History of a New Enterprise' and 'Some Facts and Figures about the Dorchester' respectively. Professor C.H. Reilly offers an architect's perspective. The colour plates, which reproduce drawings of the hotel's interior, are a different selection compared to other copies we have seen.
