Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of $3.00. Extremities of dustwrapper very slightly rubbed and creased. Head and tail of spine of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. Small closed tear to tail of spine of dustwrapper. Tiny 2mm closed tear to top edge of rear panel of dustwrapper. Rear panel of dustwrapper slightly rubbed (being a white background. Spine and front panel of dustwrapper bright. ***240 pages. 194 mm x 130 mm. ***Short Stories: The Little Farm; Colonel Julian; Time Expired; The Lighthouse; Joe Johnson; The Park; Sugar for the Horse; The Flag; No More the Nightingales; The Bedfordshire Clanger; A Girl Called Peter; The Major of Hussars; Mrs. Vincent; A Christmas Song; The Frontier. ***'Colonel Julian is the first collection of Bates' short stories since the memorable "There's Something in the Air", published under the pseudonym of Flying Officer X. In these fifteen stories, with four exceptions, he returns to the English countryside, his favorite setting. Against this quiet background, he sets unheroic lives in stories objectively and beautifully told - tragically as in The Park, The Little Farm, and Colonel Julian; comically as in the two stories of Uncle Silas, an earthy figure of Breughel-like dimensions; tragicomically as in Joe Johnson and A Major of the Hussars. ***These stories are of crystalline conciseness. In a very short story, The Flag, he is able to show the disintegration and tragedy not only of a man and a house, but of the whole era and class they represent. And often, as in a story of ruthless sensuousness called The Lighthouse, the fullest impact comes from beyond the final page.' (Quote from inside front and rear flaps of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the first US edition in its original dustwrapper, in nice collectable condition. Graham Greene called his stories as good as Chekhov. Others compare him to Conrad and Stephen Crane. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Thomas S.
