Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition maroon boards/brown spine/gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Illustrations; Introduction by Byron Hollinshead; Acknowledgments; Illustration Credits; and A Note About the Editor. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. "Twenty distinguished American historians vividly re-imagine twenty events of great drama and significance in our country's past. "What is the scene or incident in American history that you would like to have witnessed - and why?" This is the thought-provoking question that editor Byron Holingshead posed to twenty of our finest interpreters of American history with the invitation to write a personal essay answering it. The result is I Wish I'd Been There, a book that trains a lens on crucial moments of our past and brings them to vivid life. With these peerless scholars as their guides, readers will be transported to the Salem witch trials, the Lewis and Clark expedition, the raid on Harpers Ferry, the assissination of Abraham Lincoln, the Scopes "monkey trial," the beginnings of the Vietnam War, the voting rights march to Selma, and other turning points of our national drama. Contributors include Mary Beth Norton, Joseph Ellis, Jay Winik, Carol Berkin, Kevin Baker, Robert Cowley, Carolyn Gilman, Geoffrey Ward, Robert Dallek, and William Leuchtenburg, among other luminaries of the historical profession. I Wish I'd Been There is a marvelous concept, wonderfully and imaginatively executed. The result is an American pageant of character and event that will attract and delight readers of history." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. This is the First Stand-Alone, Hardcover Edition of the book, "The Lyman Letters : New Light on Emily Dickinson and Her Family" by Professor Richard B. Sewall. It was published in 1965 by the University of Massachusetts Press, thus reprinting the article originally published in the August 1965 issue of 'The Massachusetts Review' From the book's dust-jacket: "THE LYMAN LETTERS tell for the first time the story of the thirty-year friendship of Joseph Bardwell Lyman with the Dickinson family, especially with Emily and her sister Lavinia, whom at one time Lyman intended to marry. They throw light on many a biographical crux, including Emily's attitude toward her father and sister, her first reading of the Bible and her first sense of the power of words, and her much-discussed, enigmatic ". terror since September. Lyman lived with the family for a time in the 1840s and corresponded with them for many years after his departure from New England in 1851. Most of his references to them, however, appear in his correspondence with with others, mainly in his letters between the years 1856 - 1858, to his fiancée, Laura Baker. These letters are an important witness to life in the Dickinson home, and especially to the character and qualities of the two sisters. Nine letters from Emily, two from Lavinia, and one from Austin appear here, in whole or in part, for the first time. Lyman, in his correspondence with others, transcribed 'Snatches' of Emily's letters. These are now added to the Dickinson canon." These sermons explore the profound spiritual and moral impact mothers have on the lives of their children and the character of the home. Baker delves into biblical archetypes and historical examples to illustrate the virtues of sacrifice, guidance, and unconditional love. This work serves as both a tribute and a moral guide, emphasizing the commandment to honor one's parents while highlighting the unique role mothers play as the first teachers of faith and virtue.
