Una vez que surge la corriente del Romanticismo entre los pensadores católicos, la Iglesia católica empieza a apropiarse de ese discurso frente a los desafíos de la Modernidad. Así es como el tradicional ultramontanismo se vuelve un ultramontanismo romántico y antimoderno. La Compañía de Jesús se restaura en la misma época en que acontece esta romantización del ultramontanismo. Los jesuitas empiezan a generar un discurso compatible con el romanticismo, pues se consideran víctimas que fueron suprimidas por enemigos del cristianismo. Es así como la Compañía de Jesús en la Modernidad redefine su identidad con base en una nueva autoridad: la del Soberano Pontífice. El libro estudia cómo es que la Antigua Compañía de Jesús tenía una autoridad distinta, y por ende su identidad no era la misma que la de la Nueva Compañía. Estos cambios sucedieron en Europa, pero eventualmente llegaron a México, aunque tardíamente. Los jesuitas en la Nueva España, antes de la expulsión de 1767, tenían un papel mucho más importante que en Europa al dominar en la educación y al organizar la vida social en las misiones del Norte. Dejaron un gran vacío hasta que regresaron en 1816, y pronto reanudaron sus importantes labores. No obstante, fueron nuevamente suprimidos. Así continuaron hasta el Porfiriato, cuando se estabilizó la presencia de jesuitas. Pero estos jesuitas no eran los antiguos jesuitas de tradición hispánica, sino que eran ya jesuitas romantizados como en Europa. Esto explica por qué, casi repentinamente, a partir de la década de 1880, los jesuitas empiezan a encabezar la forma embrionaria de la 'Acción Católica'. Esta actividad cobrará la misma forma politizada y beligerante que tenía en Europa sólo cuando aparezca la Revolución anticlerical a México: la Revolución Mexicana y su eventual prolongación en las Guerras Cristeras. La autoridad y la identidad de los jesuitas tendrán su apogeo precisamente en estos acontecimientos. Sin embargo, en Europa la circunstancia era ya diferente: la noción decimonónica de la autoridad comienza a desgastarse, y el síntoma más evidente de ello fue el surgimiento de los Fascismos. Lo mismo sucede con la legitimidad que tenía el Romano Pontífice y en particular la autoridad del Prepósito General de la Compañía de Jesús. Es el momento en que la autoridad se vuelve un autoritarismo. Esto tiene sus repercusiones en la Compañía de Jesús porque, como la autoridad condicionaba su identidad, ésta se ve también desgastada. Este libro recorre la historia desde que surgen una nueva autoridad y una nueva identidad de la Compañía de Jesús -en 1814- hasta que comienza su final -en 1929-.
