INTRODUZIONE In questi ultimi anni, nel cinema italiano e nei registi esordienti, sempre più s'è fatta sentire la tendenza a subordinare la scrittura cinematografica alla destinazione televisiva del prodotto filmico; destinazione che da comple…mentare, come lo era stata nel passato, è divenuta primaria. Non solo gli apporti finanziari delle emittenti televisive ai film sono ormai indispensabili per recuperare i costi di produzione, ma la fantasia è costretta a cimentarsi con le misure del piccolo schermo, in funzione del quale solitamente si costruiscono vicende, inquadrature e ritmi. Donde quell'impoverimento del tessuto visivo ogni giorno constatabile e che si associa a impalcature narrative di corto respiro. In questo quadro, che soffre per la scarsità delle eccezioni e condanna la cinematografia italiana ad una impari competizione, la riproposta dell'opera di Francesco Maselli corrisponde a sottolineare una nota che va in un'altra direzione. Nel senso che, a dispetto dei mezzi finanziari vieppiù ridotti e degli elementi generali cui abbiamo accennato, essa non rinuncia alla preminenza della visualità e alle risorse del montaggio, anche quando la parola ha largo spazio nelle tramature del racconto e dello spettacolo. In questo segno si scorge un insegnamento lontano, che risale agli anni Venti e Trenta, ai dibattiti in corso durante il periodo bellico, alla ricerca teorica e pratica di una specificità che caratterizzasse il nuovo mezzo di espressione. Si intravede un patrimonio che gli appartenenti alla generazione di Maselli hanno avuto in eredità dagli studiosi più anziani. Una riserva, questa, che gli artefici del neorealismo hanno generosamente nutrito, immettendo nella loro attività una vibrante tensione morale e ideale che li lancia alla scoperta di una realtà sino ad allora ignorata, ma che presupponeva, in ogni caso, l'affrancamento dalla stagnazione linguistica in cui s'era trovata a vivere la maggioranza dei film italiani sino al 1943. Il neorealismo per un autore come Maselli è stato un clima culturale, un punto di riferimento intellettuale, non una formula, non un modulo da applicare passivamente. Di qui l'estraneità ad ogni forma di inclinazione populista cosi come al gusto per la tranche de vie e al prevalere dell'impulso lirico. Diremo che nei film di Maselli il centro dell'enucleazione graviti attorno ad un ambiente, socialmente connotato, e allo studio di personaggi esplorati nei loro comportamenti, nella psicologia complessa e talvolta tortuosa. I maestri sono riconoscibili in Antonioni e Visconti, in due diverse lezioni che Maselli ha assimilato, maturando uno stile che non rischia di indulgere alla viscontiana tentazione del decorativo e dell'estetismo, né al freddo e sublime compiacimento fotografico antonioniano. C'è in Maselli la reinvenzione, in chiave analitica, di quelli che sono stati i postulati e i frutti migliori del cinema nazionale post-bellico.
