Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 2021 Brill hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. From the cover: A sense of loss is a driving force in most nationalist movements: territorial loss, the loss of traditions, language, national virtues or of a Golden Age. But which emotions charged the construction of loss and how did they change over time? To what objects and bodies did emotions stick? How was the production of loss gendered? Which figures of loss predated nationalist ideology and enabled loss within nationalist discourse? 13 scholars from different backgrounds answer these questions by exploring nationalist discourses during the long nineteenth century in the Baltic Sea region through political writings, lectures, novels, letters, paintings, and diaries. Contents Introduction: The Production of Loss by Anna Bohlin, Heidi Gronstrand and Tiina Kinnunen PART 1 The Production of Loss Organising Thought 1 Loss, Emotion, and Transformation of a National Idea: Poland 1795-1815 by Maciej Janowski 2 Visions of the Nation and Feelings of Loss in the Works of Steen Steensen Blicher by Jens Eike Schnall 3 Neglect, Grief, Revenge: Finland in Swedish Nineteenth-Century Literature by Anna Bohlin 4 How a Culture Was Almost Lost: The Sami in Nineteenth-Century Conceptualisations of Finnish Nationhood by Jens Grandell PART 2 Landscapes and Bodies Activating the Production of Loss 5 Entrenchments and Escape Routes: Expressing a Sense of Loss in Danish Art 1848-1864 by Peter Norgaard Larsen 6 Outreach, Invasion, Displacement: Denmark's Disputed Southern Borderland as Negotiated through Strategic and Affective Aspects of Space in Novels by Andersen and Bang by Bjarne Thorup Thomsen 7 Affective Bodies on the Move: Space, Emotions and Loss in Fredrika Runeberg's Historical Novel Lady Catharina Boije and her Daughters by Kristina Malmio 8 Carl Larsson's Spadarvet, My Little Farmstead: Paradise Regained or Lament for a Disappearing Agrarian Society? by Martin Olin 9 Sweden and Algeria in the Travel Writing of Anna Maria Roos, 1905-1909 by Jenny Bergenmar PART 3 Personal Loss and Lived Nationalism 10 'Thus Shall Our Joy Be Solemn, and Our Pain Fruitful': Nation, Loss and the Power of Emotions in Amalie von Helvig's Writings by Jules Kielmann 11 The Sense of Loss in the Context of Language Disputes in Finland: Reflections on E.F. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. This book explores how Nordic women writers for more than 400 years operated within the Lutheran state churches. It is a cross-disciplinary anthology bringing together 13 studies on Nordic womens writing, examined through the lens of religion. Whereas the Lutheran state churches restricted womens agency, they simultaneously provided platforms for womens voices during the period covered in the anthology: from the Protestant Reformation around 1550 until around 1920. A wide range of material is investigatedfrom a prayer book owned by a noblewoman during the Reformation in Denmark to transcriptions of spiritualist seances held in the early twentieth century by the Norwegian womens rights activist Ragna Nielsen; from Icelandic poetry on female martyr saints to Finnish late-nineteenth-century feminist magazines; from unpublished poems written in a leprosy hospital in Iceland by the unknown Kristin Gudmundsdottir to novels written by the world-famous Swedish author Fredrika Bremer. The focus is on Lutheran Christianity, but the anthology unearths an undercurrent of Catholic, Marian devotion running through the centuries. As the twentieth century drew near, the religious landscape was diversifiedthe revivalist movements are highlighted in Norwegian hymns and Finnish novels, while the Swedish-Jewish Sophie Elkans short stories are related to Rabbinic storytelling. This volume is essential reading for students and scholars of Nordic literature, womens studies, religious studies, and cultural history. It addresses broad subject areas including gender and religion, literary history, Scandinavian studies, feminist theology, and the intersection of faith and womens agency in early modern and modern Europe. The chapters in this book were originally published as special issues of Womens Writing. This book explores how Nordic women writers had one thing in common for more than 400 years: they had to relate to a Lutheran state church. This cross-disciplinary anthology brings together 13 studies on Nordic women's writing, examined through the lens of religion. This item is printed on demand.
