Der Warschauer Kulturphilosoph Andrzej Leder analysiert in seinem historischen Essay den Kern der gesellschaftlichen Umwälzungen Ostmitteleuropas zwischen 1939 und 1956: die Ermordung der polnischen Juden im Zweiten Weltkrieg sowie die Zerstörung des Landadels als Folge der nach 1945 aufgezwungenen neuen Gesellschaftsordnung. Leder argumentiert, dass es sich dabei um eine Revolution handelte, die die soziale Struktur der polnischen Gesellschaft grundlegend veränderte. Mit seinem geisteswissenschaftlichen und psychoanalytischen Instrumentarium zeigt er, warum sie bis in die Gegenwart nachwirkt. Leder verweist auf die Veränderung des Imaginariums dieser Umwälzungen als eines Geflechts von Mythen und Phantasmen, die das gesellschaftliche Bewusstsein bis heute bestimmen. Er erklärt die widersprüchliche Wahrnehmung einer aufgrund deutscher und sowjetischer Besatzung weder selbst bestimmten noch selbst organisierten, aber doch konkreten Beteiligung an diesen Prozessen: Alle Polen wurden unmittelbar mit der Gewalt der Besatzer konfrontiert und mussten sich dazu verhalten.
