Pamphlet. Condición: New. Veganism has come under attack from all sorts of groups. The one that baffles me the most is the anti- vegan left. Why on earth would leftists and anarchists be opposed to veganism given that it relates to one of the most pressing social justice issues of our time: animal rights? Well, they have their arguments, of course: they talk about the 'green-washing' of capitalism and about 'classism'; they associate veganism with middle-class consumerism and bourgeois reformism; they call it "unnatural"; they deny its societal and environmental impact; they dismiss the concept of rights altogether. This is a relatively new phenomenon. Veganism used to be closely linked to the political struggle against oppression. But now that it has reached the mainstream, it has lost much of its radical appeal; it is no longer considered 'sexy' among young radicals. However, this attitude towards veganism is based on a fallacy. The arguments for veganism easily withstand all of the criticism coming from the anti-vegan left, as this essay demonstrates. Paperback. Condición: New. Punk bands have produced an abundance of poetic texts, some crude, some elaborate, in the form of song lyrics. These lyrics are an ideal means by which to trace the developments and explain the conflicts and schisms that have shaped, and continue to shape, punk culture. They can be described as the community's collective 'poetic voice,' and they come in many different forms. Their themes range from romantic love to emotional distress to radical politics. Some songs are intended to entertain, some to express strong feelings, some to provoke, some to spread awareness, and some to foment unrest. Most have an element of confrontation, of kicking against the pricks. Socially and epistemologically, they play a central role in the scene's internal discourse, shaping communities and individual identities. The Poetry of Punk is an investigation into the Anglophone punk culture, specifically in the UK and the US, where punk originated in the mid-1970s, its focus being on the song lyrics written and performed by punk rock and hardcore artists. …

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 2022 Brill hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. From the cover: 'Making it old' has been a longstanding and currently particularly important counterpart to the predominant preoccupation, in Western art history, with 'making it new'. This interdisciplinary volume explores retro forms and styles, and their functions, in literature and music since the nineteenth century in a wide range of texts and musical genres from Goethe's Faust and Louis Spohr's Historical Symphony to Kurt Schwitters's Ursonate, Ezra Pound's Cantos, present-day opera and pop music. In addition, it contains an essay on a recent, innovative novelistic experimentation with the musicalization of fiction. The volume is of interest to scholars and students of literature, music and memory studies as well as to readers generally interested in nostalgia and cultural retro phenomena. Contents: SECTION 1 Historical Retro Forms and Styles 1. Then and Now: Forms and Functions of 'Retroization' in German Literature and Music of the 1830s - Frieder von Ammon 2.
