Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Kai Althoff ,Ellen Gallagher, Thomas Hirschhorn, Edgar Cleijne, Ilustrador. A clean crisp well preserved 2006 Walker Art Museum Catalogue softcover in a fine tight sewn binding. Little to no shelf wear. Text is bright and free of marks or underlining. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. Heart of Darkness centers on three large-scale installations by artists Kai Althoff, Ellen Gallagher and Thomas Hirschhorn. Working with fairy tales, science fiction and sensational imagery, these artists invite us to enter an uncanny world of their own creation, where darkness is not just a representation of chaos, madness and dystopia, but an artistic strategy in the search for clarity and empathy within the insurmountable nihilism of the twenty-first century. With an introduction by curator Philippe Vergne and individual interviews with the artists.

Not simply a textual complement to the exhibition but also an unusual combine of art works, this book is much more than just a documentation of an exhibition, it's an exhibition in book form. In spite of its classical design and hardcover binding, it is an artists' book with a truly unusual use of texts and reprints. The book will also feature sections with visual reminders and references for all of the 4th berlin biennial activities including Checkpoint Charley, Gagosian Gallery in Berlin, and the columns presented by the bb4 in Zitty magazine." -- publisher's statement. Añadir al carritoEncuadernación de tapa blanda. Condición: Muy bien. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Aceptable. Kai Althoff, Glenn Brown, and Dana Schutz invite us with deliberate guile to enter into highly idiosyncratic personal worlds and wide-ranging universes of their own creation. They put their faith in the power of the imagethough, as Oliver Koerner von Gustorf observes, there is talk at times of a framework that is not interdisciplinary, but rather antidisciplinary. Glenn Brown and Dana Schutz apply themselves to the "master discipline" of oil painting with bravura but only as a platform for corrosive flights of fancy that transport it into another dimension. Glenn Brown burrows into "the genre of painting" in order to embark on what might be called a subcutaneous journey into his Musée Imaginaire. His steady companion is a great delight in deception of all kinds: travesties of eras past and present, trompe l'oeil in the perfectly flat rendition of pastose brushstrokes, or the gradual liquefaction of false trails. The neo-rococo excrescence on the cover is the quintessential embodiment of all heads that have ever taken up residence on a cover or a canvas, and which now dissolves before our very eyes into a froth of saturated colors. The implications of a treatment of time that borrows from the workings of fairy tales and casually unites centuries, decades, and generations is fleshed out in Veit Loers essay on the work of Kai Althoff. All three collaboration artists share an aspect aptly described in Jan Avgikos' analysis of the work of Dana Schutz. Her painting is, as she puts it, an "almost encyclopedic archive of nightmarish and sensational imagery" that nonetheless shows a "life-enhancing optimism" in its "fictional post-apocalyptic setting". While Schutz's images graphically lay bare existential extremes in the life situations of society's castaways, Kai Althoff accosts us with other extremes, backdrops of gloom, such as the diabolical dimensions of German history. As in science fiction, Glenn Brown operates on a more concentrated level of materiality in his deliciously uncanny, liquefied world. The obvious, self-evident presence of the Apocalypse in the work of these three artists is, paradoxically, what makes their projects so exhilaratingly inviting and, indeed, liberating. Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This comprehensive publication is Kai Althoff's third monograph. It contains never before seen works in addition to images from every stage of the artist's career, concentrating most heavily on work since 2002. The artist considers this to be a more ideally composed retrospective than any exhibition of his work would be capable of achieving. \* \* The selection of images focuses on documenting the work in a way which addresses the character of the works as well as the artist's current and past perspectives on his oeuvre. Possessing the emotional charge of the artist's works, this book presents personal, previously withheld photographs, paintings, and writings of 'failed satire' with a deceptive sentimentality that oscillates between nostalgia and self-deprecation. This stands in contrast with the innate beauty and craftsmanship of the works, which engrossed the artist at the time of their conception. 'Souffleuse der Isolation' is also concerned with the act of re-evaluating past works and the emotional states in which they were spawned, and how this pertains to the act of revisiting past portrayals of oneself. \* \* This volume also features an epic dialectical text by the writer Angus Cook imaginatively inspired by Althoff's work, though twice failing to mention him by name. This text was written specifically for the occasion of this monograph and served as a vital conceptual basis to its composition. Also included is a text by Dr. Patrik Scherrer, lic. theology on the use of textiles in the artist's work. \* \* Published in collaboration with Kunsthalle Zürich.
