paperback. Condición: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that… encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Condición: Gut. XII, 248 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Scratches and friction on the dustjacket. Overall good and clean. - Current interpretations of Apuleius Golden Ass cover the entire spectrum from a religious autobiogra…phy to an incongruous collection of titillating stories. The goal of this book is to explain the extraordinary polyphony of Apuleius novel as a product of the 2nd century CE context, in which elite culture (philosophy and sophistic oratory) and popular entertainment not only share the same venues and appeal to the same audiences but also engage in active exchange of subject matter and histrionic techniques. The book argues that Apuleius narrative represents a mosaic of discourses each of which possesses a respectable pedigree in the world of Greco- Roman paideia. It further traces the ensuing ambiguity to the Second Sophistic rhetoric and concludes that the particular thrill of reading the novel consists in the ironic frustration of any attempt to discover a centripetal force in an irreducibly multi-polar text. ISBN 9783825357207 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 536 Original fabric with dustjacket.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. When is "closure" in fact "false closure", the deceptive opposite of apparent conclusion or perfection? 2009 marked the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Don Fowler's seminal essay "First Thoughts on Closure: Problems and Prospects" (MD 22: 75-122), a work that contributed greatly…to bringing about a broad reconsideration in Ancient literary studies of the concept of closure whether understood as an ontological feature, an aesthetic concept, an appreciative inclination on the part of a work's audience or a psychological desire of the individual to control the "text" at hand. The present volume, 'The Door Ajar: False Closure in Greek and Roman Literature and Art', seeks to mark both a debt to the ongoing influence of Fowler's work, and to frame a future discourse on false closure in particular as an artistic phenomenon. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Greek Literature and the Ideal contends that the development of Greek literature was motivated by the need to endow political geography with a sense of purposeful structure. Alexander Kirichenko argues that Greek literature was a crucial factor in the cultural production of space, and Greek…geography a crucial factor in the production of literary meaning. The book focuses on the idealizing images that Greek literature created of three spatial patterns of power distribution: a decentralized network of aristocratically governed communities (Archaic Greece); a democratic city controlling an empire (Classical Athens); and a microcosm of Greek culture located on foreign soil, ruled by quasi-divine royals, and populated by immigrants (Ptolemaic Alexandria). Kirichenko draws connections between the formation of these idealizing images and the emergence of such literary modes of meaning making as the authoritative communication of the truth, the dialogic encouragement to search for the truth on one's own, and the abandonment of transcendental goals for the sake of cultural memory and/or aesthetic pleasure. Readings of such canonical Greek authors as Homer, Hesiod, the tragedians, Thucydides, Plato, Callimachus, and Theocritus show that the pragmatics of Greek literature (the sum total of the ideological, cognitive, and emotional effects that it seeks to produce) is, in essence, always a pragmatics of space: there is a strong correlation between the historically conditioned patterns of political geography and the changing mechanisms whereby Greek literature enabled its recipients to make sense of their world. Alexander Kirichenko argues that the development of Greek literature was motivated by the need to endow political geography with a sense of purposeful structure. The discussion focuses on how power and space were understood in the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods. - 2. 'Imago mortis': "Phaedra". - 3. Ein Blick 'de profundis': "Agamemnon". - 4. Der Tod als Spektakel: "Troades". - 5. Der blanke Horror: "Medea". - 6. Das innere Monster: "Oedipus". - 7. Die Entfesselung eines Überbietungskünstlers: "Thyest". - 8. 'Mirabile visu': Das Staunen in der visuellen Ästhetik der Kaiserzeit. - 9. Lehrreiche Trugbilder: Philosophie und Theater in Senecas Oeuvre. - 10. "Du musst dein Leben ändern". Der Chor und das tragische Spektakel. 304 Seiten, gebunden (Bibliothek der klassischen Altertumswissenschaften. Neue Folge. 2. Reihe; Band 142/Universitätsverlag Winter 2013). Früher EUR 45,00. Gewicht: 586 g - Gebunden/Gebundene Ausgabe.
