About the book >.>.> In Nationalist Armies of the Russian Civil War - 1917-1922, Alexander Deryabin examines the pivotal role of various nationalist military forces during the tumultuous period of the Russian Civil War. This study focuses on the armed forces formed by disparate state institutions emerging from the collapse of the Russian Empire post-October 1917. These armies were often engaged in conflict not only with the Bolsheviks and White forces but occasionally with each other as well. The book details the formation of these national armies, which were primarily established on a volunteer basis, later transitioning to mobilised service as they gained strength. Deryabin emphasises that the creation of these forces lacked a cohesive strategy, relying heavily on the remnants of the old military structure and existing armaments. By 1919, despite their chaotic beginnings, these nationalist armies had developed clearer organisational frameworks, complete with divisions, corps, and central command structures.Deryabin also highlights the varied levels of professional expertise among the leadership of these armed forces. Many leaders emerged from the ranks of the civil war rather than the Russian Imperial Army, with notable exceptions including high-ranking officers who had trained at prestigious military academies. The composition of these commands included not only individuals from newly formed nations but also former officers from other military forces, such as the German, Austrian, and Turkish armies.Additionally, the book elucidates the military competencies of these nationalist armies. Deryabin stresses their advanced tactical communication, effective use of cavalry and infantry, and the integration of various combat units and branches. Through comprehensive analysis, Nationalist Armies of the Russian Civil War provides an insightful exploration of the complexities and capabilities of these diverse military groups during a critical epoch in Russian history. About the book >.>.> Interventionist Forces of the Russian Civil War - 1917-1922: Uniforms, Arms and Equipment by Alexander Deryabin provides a detailed examination of the foreign military interventions in the former Russian Empire during the tumultuous years of the Russian Civil War. The book elaborates on the involvement of both Central Powers and Entente countries, highlighting their differing compositions and levels of military preparedness. Deryabin discusses the strategic aims behind these interventions, particularly focusing on the justifications presented by German and Japanese units for their presence, purportedly rooted in defence and the rescue of peoples from Bolshevik rule. The narrative also addresses the varied effectiveness of these interventionist forces, pointing out that while German and Japanese troops were more strategically prepared and experienced, other forces, such as American, Greek, and Italian soldiers, struggled to comprehend the complexities of the conflict. Despite their limited numbers, the interventions were significantly backed by military expertise from World War I, providing these forces with essential resources, including ammunition, uniforms, and food supplies. This aspect illustrates the complexities of foreign involvement as it intertwined with local conflicts and contributed to the broader military landscape in Russia.Deryabin?s work underscores the negative impact of foreign military intervention on Russia's military and political dynamics during the Civil War, shedding light on how these interventions influenced the formation and development of the armed forces of the counter-revolution. Through detailed descriptions of uniforms, arms, and equipment, the book offers a comprehensive overview that illustrates both the historical context and the material aspects of the conflict, contributing to a deeper understanding of this critical period in Russian history. About the book >.>.> Red Army of the Russian Civil War 1917 - 1922 Uniforms, Arms and Organization by Alexander Deryabin provides a comprehensive examination of the uniforms, arms, and organisation of the Worker?s-Peasants Red Army, also known as the RKKA. This work traces the evolution of the Red Army's attire from its origins in the Red Guard units formed after the February Revolution of 1917 and the remnants of the old Russian Imperial Army. The initial uniforms blended old military styles with distinguishing red armbands and additional insignia, marking a deliberate effort to differentiate the new revolutionary forces. The book details the various garments worn by RKKA soldiers, including service caps, tunics, and trousers, which were often adapted from previous military gear or civilian clothing due to supply limitations. As the war progressed, a move towards standardisation emerged, leading to the introduction of regulated uniforms, such as the distinctive cloth hat adorned with a coloured star, initially termed Bogatyr and later known as ?Budyonovki.? This transition reflected a broader movement within the Red Army towards unity and identification, even as logistical challenges persisted in providing adequate supplies for all personnel.Deryabin also addresses the significant contributions of clothing factories that mobilised to produce uniforms and footwear, albeit under challenging circumstances. The narrative shifts to highlight the attention given by Bolshevik leaders, notably L.D. Trotskii, who advocated for improved uniform provision to ensure the effectiveness and morale of the RKKA. Through meticulous documentation, this book serves as an essential resource for understanding the military attire that played a crucial role during the turbulent years of the Russian Civil War. (LL).

About the book >.>.> White Armies of the Russian Civil War - 1917-1922: Uniforms, Arms, Organisation by Alexander Deryabin explores the complexities of the Civil War in Russia, focusing on the conflicting forces known as the Whites and Reds during the tumultuous years of 1917 to 1922. The book delves into the catastrophic impact of the war, which shattered the fabric of Russian society and led to the downfall of the royal family, leaving a divide that persists to this day.Deryabin provides a detailed examination of the White and National Armies' structure, equipment, and uniforms, shedding light on the historical context of these forces that emerged as volunteer battalions. The narrative captures a time of fervent self-sacrifice and military enthusiasm, although many victories for the White forces proved to be pyrrhic, resulting in significant loss of experienced soldiers. As the conflict wore on, forced conscription became necessary, diminishing the effectiveness and morale of these armies. The book also highlights the symbolism and ideological significance of uniforms, reflecting the political stances of the opposing sides. Deryabin discusses how these uniforms served not only as identifiers but also embodied the ideological divides, with the Whites representing orthodoxy and national unity. The distinct marking systems created during this period played a crucial role in differentiation, contributing to the character and identity of the combatants. In summary, this work offers a thorough overview of the White Armies, addressing their organization, arms, and uniformity, while contextualizing their place within the broader narrative of the Russian Civil War.
