Softcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: not applicable. First Edition. 'In 1740, at the age of 17, Sir Francis Henry Drake of Buckland and Nutwell in Devon succeeded his father as Baronet and in due course followed him as MP for Bere Alston. This volume presents 320 letters written to Sir Francis between 174…0 and 1778 by his Devon overseer, Nicholas Rowe, and by his London agent, William Hudson. The early letters from Devon have much to say about elections and related property dealings in the pocket borough of Bere Alston, while the later ones centre on Sir Francis's reshaping of Nutwell Court and its gardens. Health matters are an issue throughout, and the letters from London are a rich source of information on eighteenth-century medical practice in the city as well as in the country. They also informed Sir Francis about London society and parliamentary business during the months he spent in Devon. Taken as a whole, they offer a rich insight into eighteenth-century life both in Devon and in London'. Volume 62 in the New Series of D&CRS publications. Very good, clean and sound copy - a few small marks to wrappers. No inscriptions. [12] + 332 pages, index. Approx. size 9" by 6". Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; ISBN: 0901853623. ISBN/EAN: 9780901853622. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 28899.

Softcover. Condición: Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice book in great condition. Pages in excellent condition. No notes or highlighting. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> In 1957 a collection of Drake family papers was deposited in the Devon Record Office, now the Devon Heritage Centre (DHC), and c…atalogued as 346M. Most of these papers pertain to collateral descendants of the famous Sir Francis Drake, circumnavigator of the globe, who died without issue in 1996. The DHC introduction to 346M notes that the papers were deposited much as they had been assembled by the last member of this branch of the family, Elizabeth Douglas Fuller-Eliott-Drake, by marriage Baroness Seaton, in the early twentieth century. Lady Fuller-Eliott- Drake wrote a family history that draws extensively on the papers. It has been a useful source of information for the current edition. The edition comprises letters written during the period 1740-1778, and enclosed, perhaps since the late eighteenth century, in four neatly labelled folders. The time span falls within the reigns of two kings: George II (1727-1760) and his grandson George III (1760-1820). It includes the War of Austrian Succession (1742-17.
