8vo, pamphlet, later brown cloth with gilt title on spine, folding map, 24 lithograph plates, 32 pp. Some wear to cloth, bookplate on front pastedown, lacks wrappers, foxing to plates and map, darkening to text block, some creasing to map, which makes it hard to open (but in very nice shape); otherwise very good. This work appea…rs to include the first mapping of New Mexico of the newly acquired territory. The pamphlet also contains 24 lithograph plates attributed to Abert, which show scenes of Native Americans and locations in New Mexico, including Santa Fe, San Felipe and the Pueblos. Abert (1820-1897) was a soldier, naturalist, and artist who served in the Civil War. The text describes Abert's trip from Fort Leavenworth over the Santa Fe Trail. Abert's map appears to have been the most detailed of the New Mexico Territory up to that point. Graff 5. Howes A11. Sabin 57. Wagner-Camp 143.Streeter 168. James W. Abert. (ilustrador).

One of the great southwestern government-sponsored explorations, here in its earliest form, according to Wagner-Camp. The lithographed plates, attributed to Abert himself, include views of Santa Fe, Fort Marcy, San Felipe, the Pueblos, Indians, etc., and are among the most celebrated depictions of the region. The text describes…Abert's trip from Fort Leavenworth over the Santa Fe Trail via Bent's Fort, his survey of the northern part of New Mexico and return via the Trail. Also included are the numerals and vocabulary of the Cheyenne. ".A basic SFT document" - Rittenhouse. HOWES A11. FLAKE 726. RITTENHOUSE 2. GRAFF 5. WAGNER-CAMP 143. SABIN 57. STREETER SALE 168. Scarce First Edition. 29th Congress, 1st Session, Senate Doc. 438, Serial 477. 8vo. 75pp. 11 lithograph plates; 2 lithographed maps (1 large and folding). Stitched wraps (disbound). Light dampstaining throughout, otherwise fine condition (and scarce thus) in modern cloth case with gilt-lettered morocco label at spine. Scarce fir…st edition of Abert's important report with a significant map. Under Fremont's orders, Abert travelled from Bent's Fort to Raton Pass, down the Canadian River, to Old Fort Holmes, through the Creek Nation ending at Fort Gibson. "It is said that Abert made the first astronomical observations through this unknown country and his report is therefore of special importance. The map is one of great interest." Wheat Transmissippi. Wheat also suggests that Charles Preuss drew the map for publication. The lithograph plates show striking views of West Texas and Oklahoma; one is the noted plate of Bent's Fort. (Wheat Transmissippi 489; Rittenhouse 1; Graff 6; Wagner-Camp 120; Howes A10; Sabin 59).
