A beautiful 3000 copy limited edition book designed by Lawton and Alfred Kennedy of San Francisco. There is an unusual statement on verso of the title page that this book may be used in whole or in part by anyone who wishes to do so with the Editor's compliments for no copyright exists on this work. The text is from Lt. Abert's field notebook that is a daily record of his journey and return. The illustrations are from his sketchbook. The original notebook consists of 260 unnumbered pages measuring 7 by 9 inches and bound in boards with marbled paper and spine and corner reinforced with black leather. At the top of the first page is written in ink the title: Notes connected with Genrl. Kearny's Expedition to New Mexico 1846. Abert used indifferent spelling, punctuation, and grammar however he could pay some attention to these things when he chose. The notebook includes 22 pages headed English Grammar but these are in ink and dated 1847 and was probably written after his return. There are 172 pages of the Notes in the form of daily diary entries. On three other pages, a vocabulary of Indian words and English equivalents is begun but not completed. The rest of the notebook is blank except that on one page there is copied the Spanish of Gen. Kearny's Aviso dated at Santa Fe, September 22, 1846, naming the men he was appointing to conduct the new civil government of New Mexico. The sketchbook, which, like the notebook, is from a stationer's stock in trade is of 136 leaves bound in boards. The first leaf ss titled Sketches on a march to New Mexico with Gen. S. W. Kearny, Ft. Leavenworth to Santa Fe, 1846, when the U.S. Army, of 3,000 men conquered New Mexico. The pages are numbered by hand, with some omissions as when a leaf was later cut out, and some repetitions of number. Two sheets and a half-sheet are pasted to pages already included in the count. Almost every leaf has on its recto side a watercolor sketch. There are also a few pen or pencil drawings. Some two dozen of the sketches are of landscapes or buildings, or details thereof. Most of the others are of plants, with or without flowers, and some of these are accompanied by drawings of insects. A handful are of birds, animals or reptiles. A few are of human beings. All show a high degree of artistic skill. Contents: Introduction, From Fort Leavenworth to Bent's Fort, Southward from Bent's Fort to Santa Fe, From Santa Fe to the Old and New Placers, Explorations Westward and Eastward, Southward to Valverde and Return, From Santa Fe back to Fort Leavenworth, and Conclusion by Steamer to Louisville. Plus Appendices of Notes Concerning Animals, Birds, Plants, Minerals, and Fossils. There are two fold-out maps of the Territory of New Mexico and A Mao of Mexico and California with Abert's Route Superimposed. The book you see in the image is the actual book we have for sale. A valuable document of early Western travel.The original edition of 1846 is Howes A10. James James Abert (1788-1863), b. Shepherdstown, Virginia; d. Washington, DC. Abert graduated at West Point (1811), served in the War of 1812, was brevetted Major for gallantry at the Battle of Bladensburg (1814), and was appointed Chief of the Topographic Bureau in 1829. He led the Corps of Topographical Engineers for 32 years, overseeing the exploration and mapping of the American West. He held the rank of Colonel at his retirement. Colonel Abert was a member of many national and international geographical and scientific societies.Abert's paintings from life, reproduced herein, are remarkable. He was sometime instructor of art at West Point (see Wagner-Camp 143), and his paintings portray life in the West now gone forever."The Army and the country will not need to be reminded of the vast interest and value attached to the operations of this Corps since its organization. The geographical and other information concerning this continent which its officers have collected and published has challenged the admiration of the scientific world, while the practical benefit of their labors has been felt in nearly every State and every Territory; the whole forming a proud monument to him who was its founder. As a citizen and a man, Colonel Abert was remarkable for the steadfastness of his friendships, for his candor and unostentatious hospitality.
