Añadir al carritoFirst edition. [6], 5-55pp, [1]. Modern green wrappers. Book-label of J. O. Edwards to verso of upper wrapper. Small marginal worm-track running throughout, blank lower margin of leaf F1 shaved, ink-stamps of Merton House to terminal leaf, scattered spotting. The sole edition of the first published work of historian and poet Richard Polwhele (1760-1838). Born at Truro, Cornwall, Polwhele began to write poetry when about twelve years old. His juvenile production received praise, most notably from satirist John Wolcot (bap. 1738, d. 1819), then a resident of Truro. The flattery of friends encouraged him to publish The Fate of Lewellyn under the moniker of 'a young gentleman of Truro School', whereupon a critic for the Monthly Review quipped that the master of the school should have kept it in manuscript. The volume did nothing to further his career, indeed it gave him the reputation of an unpromising poet - a reputation he was fortunately able to shake off with later efforts. ESTC T109007. Añadir al carritoNA. Condición: Fine. First Edition. Early piece of animal humanitarian ephemera, dating to 1850 probably, and thus 27 years prior to the publication of "Black Beauty". The RSPCA was founded in 1824 and thus predates this poem, but we would note that the ASPCA didn't get started until 1904. The 1850 dating is based on tiny writing at the right foot of the wood engraved illustration of an ass. The "5" in the date, even though reasonably well-formed, we would allow might have been intended to be an "8"; that said, we are 90 percent confident 1850 was what was intended. The broadside measures 26.5 by 14 cm. Below the wood engraved illustration of the beast of burden, a 36 line poem, rhymed throughout, that marvels at the stoicism of the animal whose life would seem so miserable. Below is an initial, "S", which might be a clue to the anonymous poet. Clearly a scarce item -- we could find no other copies -- none listed on OCLC First Search. Light wear, trivial soiling. A lovely copy.…
