4to. [8], CCxxviii, [1], Cxlvi leaves. Later calf binding ornately tooled in blind, with plain brown endpapers. Expertly rebacked with the original spine re-laid. All edges gilt. The Foyle copy with Wm. Foyle's red leather label. *1-*8, d1-d8, Ss3-Ss8, Tt1-Tt2 are all neatly replaced with leaves from a 19th century letterpress edition with the margins extended to size. The Continuation lacks Aa1, Tt3-Tt8 & Vv1-Vv8. Laid onto the front board is a Christie's catalogue description of this copy. STC 12766.7 which is the issue with the text of Henry VIII's reign truncated. Hardyng was closely associated with the major figures of his time, serving under Sir Henry 'Hotspur' Percy, at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403 and under Sir Robert Umfraville at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. After the death of Umfraville in 1436, Hardyng retired to the Augustinian Priory at Kyme, Lincs., close to the Umfraville's Kyme Castle. He wrote the two versions of his chronicle while living at Kyme, one Lancastrian and the other Yorkist in their emphasis. He probably lived at Kyme until his death c.1465. The Continuation was compiled by Richard Grafton from available sources including a text of Thomas More's unfinished Life of Richard III which had not been previously printed.
