Buch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume is a collection of studies on various aspects of word order variation in Turkish. As a head-final, left-branching 'free' word order language, Turkish raises a number of significant theory-internal as well as language-particular questions regarding linearization in language. Each of the contributions in the present volume offers a fresh insight into a number of these questions, thus, while expanding our knowledge of the language-particular properties of the word order phenomena, also contribute individually to the theory of linearization in general. Turkish is a configurational language. It licenses constructions in which constituents can occur in non-canonical presubject as well as postverbal positions. Presented within the assumptions of the generative tradition, the discussion and analyses of the various aspects of the linearization facts of the language offer a novel treatment of the issues therein. The authors approach the word order phenomena from a variety of perspectives, ranging from purely syntactic treatments, to accounts as syntax-PF interface or syntax-discourse interface phenomena or as output of base generation.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This monograph examines sources of variation in the grammars of heritage speakers, focusing on word order in Turkish and Kurmanji Kurdish as heritage languages in the contexts of majority German and majority Turkish. By bringing together the relatively well-studied case of heritage Turkish and the less extensively researched case of heritage Kurdish, the study develops a comparative framework for identifying mechanisms that shape heritage grammars. It evaluates several explanatory factors, including cross-linguistic influence, language-internal dynamics, and register. The analysis also moves beyond a monolingual-bilingual contrast by including bilingual speakers for whom Turkish serves as the societal majority language, thereby shifting the focus from bilingualism per se to the role of a language's societal status as heritage or majority. In sum, the findings demonstrate that register is a central factor shaping variation in word order of heritage Turkish, whereas cross-linguistic influence plays a more prominent role in heritage Kurdish. More broadly, the study underscores the need to expand the empirical scope of heritage language research to include a wider range of languages and sociolinguistic settings, fostering closer dialogue with studies of minoritized languages and multilingual language communities. 204 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This study investigates the type of language transfer or cross-linguistic influence in English word order acquisition of Turkish - Dutch bilinguals living in the Netherlands. Word order is looked into with respect to 'topicalization' and 'relative clauses' (RCs). Thus, this is a research on language transfer in third language acquisition (L3A), which, more specifically, seeks answers to the questions of what type of word order transfer Turkish - Dutch bilinguals process in acquisition of English as an L3 and whether they transfer from their L1 or their L2. Grammaticality Judgment Task was carried out for this research on both Turkish - Dutch bilinguals and Turkish monolinguals in Turkey. The results of this research have shown that Turkish - Dutch bilinguals make use of their L2 Dutch rules rather than their L1 Turkish in their English word order acquisition. It has also been found out that Turkish monolinguals are influenced by their L1 Turkish less than Turkish - Dutch bilinguals are affected by their L1 Turkish.…
