Hardback. Condición: New. Viewing Distance compiles and transforms declassified material from US government archives to examine photography as a tool of the military-industrial complex for reconnaissance, surveillance, and documentation of advanced technologies. While many of the source images for this body of work date back to…the middle 20th century, they have only recently been released and much information remains secret. These pictures represent the decades-long time delay from when knowledge comes into being and when it becomes publicly accessible. The Cold War period that much of the material originates from is a significant turning point in photography's technological development and use for intelligence gathering. The book combines photographs pertaining to the clandestine innovations and operations of that era with contemporary documents and devices, connecting past and present. Processes including analog printing, digital collage, scanner manipulation, and data bending are used to animate the archival material. Through this disruption and layering, historical fragments are presented in a state of flux, open to alternate associations and implications. What we are allowed to know and see is often incomplete and indeterminate, encouraging speculation and critical vision.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - There is a peculiar discomfort that arises when intelligent, serious people - scientists, military officers, intelligence analysts - claim to have witnessed something that should not be possible. The instinct, especially for those trained in rational inquiry, is to reach for an explanation…that makes the problem go away: fraud, self-deception, wishful thinking. And sometimes that instinct is correct. But sometimes the discomfort itself is the most important data point. This book is about remote viewing: a claimed human ability to perceive information about distant locations, objects, or events without the use of any known sensory mechanism. It is a phenomenon that most people, if they encounter it at all, file away under 'psychic nonsense' and move on. That dismissal is understandable. It is also, this author would argue, premature. For more than two decades, the United States government quietly funded a classified research program that took remote viewing seriously - not as folklore, not as a curiosity, but as a potential intelligence-gathering tool. The program employed trained military personnel, operated under Defense Intelligence Agency oversight, and produced results that were, depending on whom you ask, either astonishing or underwhelming. The program was eventually terminated. But it was not terminated because it was proven impossible.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the crucial link between letter size and visibility in signage, providing practical guidance for designers and specifiers. Drawing on a wealth of empirical research, the author presents a simple formula that determines the optimal letter size for any given viewing di…stance and observer visual acuity. The formula is based on the assumption that beyond a few meters, a person's visual acuity is primarily determined by the visual angle subtended by an object. By incorporating allowances for variations in contrast and background luminance, the book equips readers with the tools to compensate for non-standard conditions. The author emphasizes that letter size should not be a one-size-fits-all approach but rather customized to accommodate different viewing distances and individual visual abilities. Proper consideration of these factors ensures effective communication and safety, particularly in situations where signs convey critical information or warnings. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
