A matched set of photoplays, b…oth released in tandem with the 20th Century Fox 1936 Foreign Legion film starring Ronald Colman, Claudette Colbert, Rosalind Russell, and Victor McLaglen. Ouida's original novel, published in 1888, is a Victorian classic, telling the story of an older brother who saves his younger brother's reputation from ruinous gambling debts by taking the blame and enlisting to fight for the French Cavalry in Algeria. This Grosset photoplay is Fine in a Near Fine DJ. The Burt edition has some discoloration (not wear) to the cloth but that's redeemed by its Near Fine dust jacket. Both photoplays have five stills and photographic endpapers. The Burt version has a photographic cover, the Grosset version sports cover artwork by Mach Tey, the greatest photoplay cover illustrator of his generation. Mach Tey (ilustrador).

Originally published in 1867, Under Two Flags was "was one of Ouida's most… famous and successful novels of the 1860s." (Natalie Schroeder, Shari Hodges Holt, Ouida the Phenomenon. Evolving Social, Political, and Gender Concerns in Her Fiction (2008, p.70). It was one of the first of Ouida's works to reach the silver screen, adaptations appearing in 1916, 1922, and 1936. "Under Two Flags, which Ouida originally wrote for a military periodical, focuses on honor and adventure - fox hunts, horse racing, exotic landscapes, and foreign warfare" (ibid). Ownership inscription and date (1882) to title-page with a tear resulting from the effaced surname, pen inscription to upper board similarly effaced. Boards scuffed, hinges cracked but holding, joints worn and webbing visible, head and tail of spine cracked, and with losses to the paper on the lower board. Internally in reasonably good order.
