Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. Longmans, Green & Co., New York. 1927. 352 pages. First edition, second printing, stated. Published in the same month and year as the first printing, September, 1927. Original scarce DJ is included, which is the exact same DJ used on first printings,… from the same month and year of this publication. $2.50 price intact on DJ flap. The original DJ is more rare than even signed first printings, as the cheap paper used on these dust jackets have in large part, crumbled away. As for this copy, the book is bright, tight and clean. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. Red cloth covered panels still maintain their original sheen. Titles stamped in black, unmarred, without rubbing. Book's only flaw is a bruise on lower right front corner tip, with minor faint evidence of ensuing page corners (faint.) Rare original DJ shows chipping on lower right corner, and at foot and crown on spine. Faint remnants of an old price sticker on spine, that looks like it could be removed with goo be gone. Loosely laid-in is an original, vintage 1955 Topps All-American Football Rookie Card, of Alonzo Stagg. As for Alonzo Stagg, he invented the end-around, the hidden-ball trick, the fake punt, the quick-kick, man-in-motion plays, the double-reverse, the huddle, the backfield shift, the Statue of Liberty play, padded goal posts, and numbers on players' backs. It is no wonder that Knute Rockne said, "All football comes from Stagg." And for good measure, he also invented the baseball batting cage, and the trough for overflow in swimming pools. Rare in DJ. About near fine/good, with all flaws noted.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. First Edition. Cloth. Illustrated with photographs. SIGNED on the front endpaper "Sincerely,/Amos Alonzo Stagg/December, 1927." A scarce early inscription before his writing became shaky by one of the most important figures in American sports. Stagg, the first to be elected to the Football Hall of Fame as both player…and coach, was active in the sport until the age of 98. He is credited with originating more plays and formations than any other man and, among other developments, is responsible for the forward pass, the huddle, and numbered uniforms. Stagg also invented the indoor batting cage and pioneered the headlong slide in baseball. In addition Stagg participated in the first public basketball game on 11 March 1892, scoring his team's only basket, and the first intercollegiate basketball game on 18 January 1896. He is said to be responsible for the concept of five-man basketball. Of the Grand Old Man of the Game, Knute Rockne once said, "All football comes from Stagg." Owner inscription on the half-title page. Near Fine, lacking the scarce dustwrapper.
