A #1 New York Times bestseller, Wall Street Journal Best Book of the Year, and soon to be a major motion picture, this unforgettable novel of love and strength in the face of war has enthralled a generation. France, 1939 - In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive. Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others. With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. Soft Wrappers. Condición: Very Good-. y First Edition Thus. Russian Language and Literature, Most Recent Listing; 32 pages; Manchehof bei Kassel, [Germany]: Izdatel'stvo "Posev". Very Good-. 1946. First Edition Thus. 32 pp. Pages; Russian text. Publisher's printed wrappers -- published by Izdatel'stvo "Posev" in Manchehof bei Ka…ssel, near Frankfurt, Germany. Covers somewhat soiled, with marks at the metal staples used in binding, and a tiny chip missing at the rear corner of the front wrapper. Printed price: 2 marks on the rear wrapper. A short story by the Soviet master satirist Mikhail Zoshcheko. The printing house had been founded the previous year right after the conclusion of the second World War in the Manchehof displaced persons camp in the American sector -- in the state of Hesse. The founders were Russian political refugees; the first two editors were B. N. Serafimov (pseudonym of Priashnikov, 1945-46) , followed by A. S. Svetov (pseudonym of Parfënov, 1946-47) . The author, Mikhail Zoshchenko left Law School lacking funds to continue, trained as an officer in the Russian Army serving in several campaigns in the first World War, winning two medals for bravery. After the Revolution in 1917, he became Commandant of the Post Office and Telegraph in Petrograd -- During the Civil War of the Revolution, he served for a few months until having to retire from active military service due to heart troubles. In 1920 he took up writing, and joined a group of Petrograd authors styling themselves as the Serapion Brothers. (They borrowed their name from German colleagues, 'Die Serapionsbrader. ') They mostly produced short works featuring the absurd and avant-garde parodies suggested by the peculiar nature of Soviet life in times of change. Zoshchenko cultivated a seemingly simple style involving short sentences -- he became vastly popular, his works selling millions of copies over the next twenty years. One particular subject of his found a receptive audience in the millions of Soviet citizens who found themselves living in communal apartments in the cities, where many families shared a single kitchen and bathroom. Zoshchenko's willingness to push the envelope of Soviet authorities control of literature; Andrey Zhdanov, the leader of the Communist Party unit in Leningrad, condemned Zoshchenko's children's story 'The Adventures of a Monkey' as an attack on the Soviet lifestyle in his notorious Party Resolution of 1946. Zoshchenko was expelled from the Soviet Writers' Union, and he and poet Anna Akhmatova, were deprived of their 'worker's ration card' - the crucial path to finding food during a time of widespread starvation. Publishers, editors of journals and theater managers cancelled his contracts and demanded that he repay advances that had previously been flowing freely. He found it to repay under his new circumstances. A few translations could not pay his bills, so he sold his possessions and found employment working for a shoemaker. This tiny publication, issued in a displaced persions camp in Germany is both scarce and emblematic of the author's difficulties. He had little success in his struggles to regain his name and position in Soviet literary society; eventually he wrote directly to Stalin, claiming that he never intentionally "worked to support landowners and bankers" -- as his accusers phrased his expulsion. Following Stalin's death in 1953, Zoshchenko was allowed to rejoin the Soviet Writers' Union. But things were never as they had been during the two decades of his soaring popularity before the second World War. In an autobiography, he made a succinct statement; "Here is a dry table of the events in my life: Arrested - 6 times, sentenced to death - 1 time, wounded - 3 times, committed suicide - 2 times, got beaten up - 3 times. " Now, of course, he is again wildly popular in Russia and whereever readers of Russian find themselves. The small publishing venture which issued this tiny book in 1946 moved the next year as the displaced persons camp emptied in 1947, e.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. NIGHTINGALE, FLORENCE. (1820-1910). British nurse, hospital reformer and humanitarian. Her book: Notes on Nursing, what it is and what it is not. Harrison, London, [1860]. First edition, very early, true first state, with the notice: ''[The right of translation is reserved]'' at the base of the title…page and with illustrated, light-yellow end-papers bearing advertisements for Burkes' Peerage, The Foreign Office List for 1860 [with the 8 in 1860 in slightly larger type] and Anthems for Parish Choirs listed. Original dark brown/black pebbled cloth, with front cover lettered in gilt, blind-stamped ruling to covers, and spine. Early dated ownership signature of Clara Jane Harper / June 1860 at top of title page. With a fine presentation: With Florence Nightingale s / Compliments and thanks tipped in on the front title page. Overall, an exceptionally fine copy. In this book, [which was to become greatly expanded in just a few months, and thus the significance of our early state copy] Nightingale describes how she envisions the expanded duties of the nurse in caring for patient's needs, and she urges a new and more responsible role for nurses, [and] one that requires proper training and medical knowledge". Nightingale came to great prominence during the Crimean War, in caring for wounded British soldiers. The "Lady with the Lamp" as she was portrayed in the press of the time, became a symbol of the new ideas of Victorian medical hygiene and patient care. Nightingale published her Notes on Nursing in January 1860, and by March 15,000 copies had been sold. These true first printings are exceedingly scarce, and to find one in this superb condition, is indeed a rarity.
