Melina Rorke knew Rhodes and Kruger, trekked with baby son from Kimberley to Bulawayo by oxcart, saved her family from warrior's spears while fleeing the Matabele War, did heroic hospital work in Boer War, at the siege of Mafeking, and was decorated by Edward VII. Her vivid memoir describes the conditions in the diamond mines and gives insight into white views of Black people in S. Africa in the 1890's. A good copy in blue cloth, lightly worn at extremities. No ownership marks, but library blind-stamp to title. Illustrated dust jacket is torn, with losses to spine, is held together with protective cellophane.
