Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Fine. First Edition. Adelaide, H.F. Leader, Government Printer [for the RGSSA], 1888. Octavo, 16 pages plus the title-wrappers. Wrappers very lightly marked on the outside of the plain rear panel; essentially a fine copy. This rare pamphlet contains an account of Lindsay's 'Arnheim's Land Explorations in 1883', but it primarily concerns a more recent expedition, 'a private one, fitted out at my own expense'. The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' has the following to say about these series of explorations by David Lindsay: 'In 1883 the South Australian government commissioned him to explore the central and eastern part of Arnheim's (Arnhem) Land; his party survived fierce attacks by Aborigines, one group numbering 300. In 1885-86 he took seven men and twelve camels from Hergott Springs to the Gulf of Carpentaria, tracing the Finke River to its mouth and seeking information about Ludwig Leichhardt. Lindsay surveyed the country between the overland telegraph line and the Queensland border, explored the MacDonnell Ranges, made a brief foray into the Simpson Desert, and spent six months in the country between Lake Nash and Powell's Creek'. This account first appeared in the Proceedings of the RGSSA, Volume 2, Third Session, 1887-8; the title-wrappers and pagination are new to this separate issue. Ferguson 11653; McLaren 12608.

Añadir al carritoFirst English separate edition. Text in English. In publisher's printed wrappers. 28 p. First English separate edition of Stein's report on his second major expedition to Central Asia between 1906 and 1908. The text is the translation of the paper Stein read at the Hungarian Geographical Society, on April 23 and 26, 1909, as it is stated on the first page. Although it reads on the cover in German, that this is a separate offprint, it is misleading because in "Földrajzi Közlemények" the paper was published in Hungarian (supposedly the cover title of the Hungarian edition was by mistake also translated and for some reason not into English but German). The first English journal edition (with slightly different text) is the one in Geographical Journal (for July and September 1909) which is the text of Stein's lecture to the Royal Geographical Society meeting of 8 March 1909. Sir Marc Aurél Stein (18621943) was a Hungarian born British archaeologist, mainly concerned with exploring ancient Central Asia. Member of "The Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire" as Knight Commander (KCIE), and Fellow of British Academy. He made four major expeditions to Central Asia in 1900, 19061908, 19131916 and 1930. His greatest discovery was made at Mogao Caves, also known as "Caves of the Thousand Buddhas", near Dunhuang in 1907. The Stein collection (mostly manuscripts and other relics) has been placed in the British Library, the British Museum, and partly to the Srinagar Museum and the National Museum in New Delhi. . Wrappers restored. Pages with traces of creasing. Otherwise in very good condition. In publisher's printed wrappers First English separate edition. Text in English.

Frontispiece, 1 profile, 8 fold-out panoramic views, 24 lithographs (some with tinted backgrounds, 8 have been additionally hand-colored), without 4 fold-out maps; 131; 154; 30; 6; 31, [1] pp. 1 vols. 4to (11-1/8 x 8-5/8 inches). William Goetzmann calls Lieutenant Ives's complete report, "The best by far of these individual reports. It is a long, carefully written journal, consciously literary but with a maximum amount of attention to scientific observation. John Strong Newberry's geological report, which accompanied Ives's narrative, is one of the best of the government geological reports." (Goetzmann gives a full account of the expedition in Army Exploration in the American West, pp.379-94). Includes these separately numbered parts: Geological Report. By Dr. J[ohn] S[trong] Newberry; Botany. By Professors [Asa] Gray, [John] Torrey [et al.]; Zoology. By Professor S[pencer] F[ullerton] Baird; and Appendices Inscribed by John Strong Newberry on the title page: "Prof. B. Silliman, Jr. with the kind regards of J.S. Newberry." John Strong Newberry, who was the naturalist on Ives' expedition up the Colorado River, wrote Part III of this Report, which deals with the Geology and Paleontology of the regions they explored. Ives' party were among the first white men to visit the floor of the Grand Canyon, and upon their return, it was Newberry who realized the canyon's geological significance and encouraged further exploration. It is likely that Newberry inscribed this copy to Benjamin Silliman, Jr., a famous chemist and Yale professor whose analysis of "rock oil" in Pennsylvania in 1855 introduced investors to the potential of petroleum and led to the drilling of Edwin Drake's successful oil well on his property in 1857. Silliman also took on consulting activities in the American West in the 1860's and favorably reported on petroleum deposits in southern California as well as gold and silver properties in California, Nevada, and northern Arizona.
