Bindings tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1995 Hard Cover. x, 725; vi, [3], 730-1774 pp. Translated from the German by Sophie Wilkins and Burton Pike, An unfinished modernist masterpiece by the Austrian writer Robert Musil. Written over the course of two decades and published in volumes between 1930 and 1943, it is widely considered one of the most important novels of the 20th century. Set in 1913 Vienna on the eve of World War I, the book is a sweeping, philosophical satire that follows a cynical, detached mathematician named Ulrich as he navigates the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This long-awaited translation, the first in English to provide a complete text, brings to its readers the greatest masterpiece in all twentieth-century German literature. Dazzlingly written, ferocious, suffused with a high, ironic intelligence, it uses Viennese high society on the eve of World War I to chronicle the decay and collapse of the entire Old World and, with utter prescience, to explore all that would follow in our Age of Anxiety.…

Robert Musil (1880-1942) was an Austrian philosophical writer. His unfinished novel, The Man Without Qualities, is generally considered to be one of the most important and influential modernist novels. The novel is a "story of ideas", which takes place in the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy's last days, and the plot often veers into allegorical digressions on a wide range of existential themes concerning humanity and feelings. It has a particular concern with the values of truth and opinion and how society organizes ideas about life and society. It was originally planned as two volumes (1930 and 1932), containing four parts. A third volume, which remained unfinished, was published posthumously. This English translation was intended as four volumes. For sale is volume I, containing books1 and 2 (part 1). The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine.
