Paperback. Condición: New. Language: English. About The Book : Red Oleanders/Raktakarabi is one of the best plays of Tagore, the myriad minded and multifaceted genius; understandably 'meanings' have been sought 'under the petals', in spite of the author's admonition, by countless readers, theatre-goers, performers/producers, and… literary critics. Raktakarabi belongs to the symbolic phase (1922-1932) of Tagore's experimentations with the dramatic form. The themesmaterialism versus humanism, industry versus agriculture, possessive greed versus selfless love, etc. are all superbly integrated into the symbolic structure of the play which, a powerful dramatic evocation of the evils of mindless industrialism, celebrates the perennial values of love, life and nature. In its symbolic suggestions and dramatic situations, luminous diction and lyrical resonance, the play is a literary tour de force and is comparable with any great play of the world. About The Author : Rabindranath Tagore FRAS born Rabindranath Thakur, (1861 1941) sobriquet Gurudev, Kobiguru, Biswakobi) was a Indian polymath - poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter. He reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of the "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful" poetry of Gitanjali, he became in 1913 the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Tagore's poetic songs were viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. He is sometimes referred to as "the Bard of Bengal". He was a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. A Bengali Brahmin from Calcutta with ancestral gentry roots in Burdwan district and Jessore, Tagore wrote poetry as an eight-year-old. At the age of sixteen, he released his first substantial poems under the pseudonym Bh?nusi?ha ("Sun Lion"), which were seized upon by literary authorities as long-lost classics. By 1877 he graduated to his first short stories and dramas, published under his real name. As a humanist, universalist, internationalist, and ardent anti-nationalist, he denounced the British Raj and advocated independence from Britain. As an exponent of the Bengal Renaissance, he advanced a vast canon that comprised paintings, sketches and doodles, hundreds of texts, and some two thousand songs; his legacy also endures in his founding of Visva-Bharati University. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced) and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works. The Title 'Red Oleanders: A Drama in one Act written/authored/edited by Rabindranath Tagore', published in the year 2022. The ISBN 9788121262408 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 187 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Gyan Publishing House. This Book is in English. The subject of this book is History. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Red Oleanders' is a powerful and evocative drama by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Set in the fictional, oppressive mining town of Yakshapuri, the play serves as a profound allegory exploring the conflict between the human spirit and the crushing weight of institutionalized greed…and industrialization. At the center of the story is Nandini, a vibrant woman whose presence challenges the cold, mechanical authority of the unseen King. Her love for the red oleander flower symbolizes beauty, passion, and the untamable essence of life amidst a world of exploitation.Tagore uses this one-act play to critique the dehumanizing effects of modern materialism and the pursuit of wealth at the expense of human dignity and nature. The narrative masterfully blends symbolism and social commentary, portraying the struggle of individuals seeking liberation from systemic tyranny. 'Red Oleanders' remains one of Tagore's most significant dramatic works, celebrated for its poetic language, philosophical depth, and timeless message regarding the triumph of the human soul over authoritarian control. This drama continues to resonate as a poignant reflection on freedom, justice, and the enduring power of beauty. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Añadir al carritoCondición: Sehr gut. 13 x 19.5cm. 181 pages. Original hardcover. Very good condition other than minor signs of shelf wear and some mild foxing. Written immediately after his visit to the US in 1923, Tagore's creative stimulation behind this play was his response to the increasingly materialistic society that he had experienced f…irst-hand in the States. He thus created an imaginary land Yakshapuri, a city full of wealth and riches where human beings are reduced to machines as they toil though their lives to cater to the insatiable greed of their ruler, the King. It is against this backdrop that the protagonist Nandini appears who dares to point a finger at the dominating authority eventually bringing about a change in the King while leading the soulless citizens to the discovery of happiness in its truest form. However, this liberation comes at a cost. [From jacket notes to softcover edition].
