Key Primary Source for Early Nineteenth-Century Upper Canada.Rare Complete Three-Volume Set in Original Boards.Robert Fleming Gourlay's Statistical Account of Upper Canada stands as one of the most detailed studies of the province of the time. It contains a vast amount of information on the early economic and social life of the province.Gourlay published his expansive survey of Canadian settler life in London in 1822, cementing his legacy as a pivotal figure in colonial reform. Arriving in Upper Canada in 1817, the Scottish-born agrarian reformer distributed a thirty-one-question survey to landowners across fifty-seven townships. The resulting responses provided an unprecedented granular view of the province, capturing its social fabric and economic potential at a critical juncture. Notably, the survey laid bare widespread dissatisfaction with colonial land-granting practices and the Clergy Reserves, propelling Gourlay into direct conflict with the authorities.Gourlay's ensuing political agitation led to multiple arrests for seditious libel and, ultimately, his banishment from the province in 1819 under the Alien Act. Returning to Britain, he compiled his findings into the present work, seeking to formulate a grand system of emigration. The title page of the main account promises a third volume, but standard bibliographies such as the Toronto Public Library's Bibliography of Canadiana (TPL 1253) note that it was never formally issued as such. Instead, Gourlay published the General Introduction (TPL 1254) as a separate companion volume to contextualize his theories on poor law reform and emigration. The General Introduction is quite extensive and includes the text of many of Gourlay's letters and addresses during the years 1817-1822. The present offering is notable for uniting the primary two-volume survey with the General Introduction, all bound in matching original boards, effectively completing Gourlay's published vision.Cartographic ContentThe text is supplemented by four engraved maps, each advancing Gourlay's arguments for systematic emigration and internal improvements. The large folding Map of Upper Canada provides a detailed overview of the region's nascent township grids and waterways, augmented by three insets detailing Kingston Harbour, York Harbour, and the practicable course of a proposed Saint Lawrence canal. Another folding map illustrates potential water communications between Lakes Erie and Ontario, forecasting the necessity of the Welland Canal.A striking inclusion is the hand-colored Sketch Distinguishing the Parts of North East America best adapted to the settlement of European Emigrants, which uses a visual coding system to evaluate regions across North America. Areas shaded in green and pink are designated as "best" for settlement, yellow as "inferior", and uncolored areas as "ba. Book.
