Contemporary full calf leather binding; strong rubbing/scuffing to boards with old ink writing on detached front board; dulled/worn gilt tooling along board edges with corners particularly worn; spine with five raised bands with both ends chipped and worn fairly even with their respective text block edges; old remnant tape strips and removal impressions on spine and front board; no evidence of a spine title label ever being present. Past owner's ink signature with 1850 date on front pastedown; blank prelims missing as first leaf present is creased title which has two areas near top clipped out (probably a removal of past owner's name); antiquarian ink signature "Nathe. Blagrove" at top of title page; toning/foxing throughout; stubs of missing rear flyleaf and rear free endpaper present. Slender splitting along rear joint but hinge is firm; text block binding remains solid. Via a handwriting sample found online, the aforementioned title page signature matches that of Nathaniel Blagrove who was appointed judge in the Bristol County [Massachusetts] Court of Common Pleas from 1723-1724 and who more enjoyed more extensive judicial service as Judge of Probate and Insolvency for Bristol County from 1733-1747.

Six very scarce eighteenth century volumes containing an abridged account of the legal statutes of England up to the tenth year of King George's reign. A fascinating historical… reference work.The preface explains that the first four volumes 'contain the abridgments of all the statutes, from Magna Charta to the End of the reign of Queen Anne' as they had previously been abridged by Wingate and Washington. The fifth and sixth volumes detail statutes passed at the end of Queen Anne's reign, and the first ten years of the reign of King George.For the ease of the reader to use these volumes as reference works, the statutes of the first four volumes have for the first time been arranged alphabetically.To the centre of volume I is a folding plate identified as a 'Table of the Assizes of Bread' and providing pricing information for various loaves. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. Some early ink ownership notes to front pastedown. The first half of the text's leaves are a bit toned, but the second half is very clean. Overall a very good copy. Contemporary calf, blind panels with corner fleurons to boards, rebacked in period style with raised bands and lettering piece, original endleaves retained. Some minor scuffs and scratches to boards, rubbing to board edges with wear to corners, hinges cracked. Moderate toning to text, occasional faint dampspotting, some edgewear to preliminaries, early annotations and pen doodles to endleaves, a few brief figures in tiny hand below arms of England. A nice copy. $400. * Fifth edition, revised. First published in 1642, Wingate's Exact Abridgment offered a shorter alternative to the lengthy compilations of Rastell and Pulton.
