Descripción del artículo del vendedor

A very scarce six volume study detailing the legal statutes of Great Britain throughout history, in uniform full calf bindings. Six very scarce eighteenth century volumes containing an abridged account of the legal statutes of England up to the tenth year of King George's reign. A fascinating historical reference work. The preface explains that the first four volumes 'contain the abridgments of all the statutes, from Magna Charta to the End of the reign of Queen Anne' as they had previously been abridged by Wingate and Washington. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. ESTC reference no. for volumes I-IV: N31274; for volumes V and VI: N2078 In full calf bindings. Minor losses to perimeters of spine labels to volumes I, IV and VI. Private library markings present to back strip of each volume. Small losses to back strip head of volume VI, and head and tail of vol I. Front and rear joint of volume III, front joint of VI and rear joint of IV starting, and held by cords only. Front joints of vols II and V slightly tender, but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright. Good.…
