Toutefois, Edwin Howlett est assurément l'un des plus reconnus en la matière tant ses principes du menage "à l'anglaise" qu'il livre dans le présent ouvrage sont encore de nos jours largement répandus. Initiated from the age of 16 by his father, himself a coachman, Edwin Howlett accumulated a wealth of experience that earned him recognition and, later, the right to teach his discipline. The art of harnessing has known many masters, including: Garsault (France), Beno von Achenbach (Germany), Beaufort (Great Britain), F. Rogers (United States) and C. Volpini (Italy). However, Edwin Howlett is undoubtedly one of the most renowned in the field, as his principles of "English-style" driving, which he describes in this book, are still widely applied today. In the first part, the author gives a complete presentation of the elements available to the coachman: the whip, the reins, the lamps, the brake and so on. In the second part, he provides a lesson for each maneuver that a good coachman must master: how to start, to turn right angle to right or to the left, drive through a gateway to the left, to back, to turn around a fountain etc. The book is dedicated to W.
