Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This volume is arecord of the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study institute on "Biochemical and Bio- logical Markers of Neoplastic Transformation" held September 28 - October 8, 1981, at Corfu, Greece. As early as 1860, Rudolf Virchow provided the first genetic concept of cancer by postulating "Omnia ceZZuZa e ceZZuZa ejusdem generis", a modification of the then exisiting cell theory "Omnis ceZZuZa e ceZZuZa". Thus, the idea that all cells originate from the parent cell was extended to the idea that all cancer cells come from the "paren t" cancer cello But how the first cancer cell arose, or in other words, how anormal cell changed to a cancer cell, is, even after 120 years, a mystery. Experimental studies of the past have convinced us that a number of factors contribute to the neoplastic transformation of anormal cell, but our knowledge on the mechanisms involved in this process is still in an embryonic state. In the last few years, however, this field has witnessed a most remarkable advancement cata- lyzed by the development of modern technology in the al lied fields of immunology, the production of mono- clonal antibodies, molecular biology, and sequencing v PREFACE and cloning of ONC genes. Presently, it is becoming more and more evident to the wishful mind of those engaged in this research that we are approaching a turning point. Thus, an assessment of the present situa- tion will be most desirable at this time. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The global population is expected to rise to 9.8 billion by the year 2050 - with everyone ultimately striving for prosperity. New methods must therefore be found to achieve more efficient production. Research to date shows that the biological inventory that has evolved: its products, processes, principles and tools, can spur modern technology. The development of technological innovations based on biological concepts, with the goal of particularly innovative and sustainable value creation, today is collectively known as "biological transformation". It results in highly functional products with striking properties that can be both manufactured and utilized in a resource-saving way.In terms of taking responsibility of the good of all people, biological transformation is therefore a path that applied research will have to take. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has recognized the developmental technology potential of biological transformation and sees it as its task not only to drive the relevant research forward, but also to promote public awareness of the topic. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume comprises the papers presented at the Session on Wood Products Pathology during the 2nd International Congress on Plant Pathology on 10th - 12th September 1973 in Minneapolis/USA. The topics were dealt with under four heads, viz. Interaction of Microorganisms during Wood Decay, Bacterial Degradation of Wood, Decay of Resistant Wood and Enzymatic Mechanisms of Deterioration Process, followed by a Discussion Session on Extension: an obli gation of all Wood Products Pathologists -. Thanks to the cooperation of the authors all the papers could be compiled in this volume. The conference gave an unique possibility to discuss in depth the principles of wood decay by microorganisms from the various angles. The chapters give detailed information on the current progress and problems in wood products pathology. They are therefore collected together in this volume so that people interested in this field will have immediate access to the material and ideas presented. The topic of this Session, the degradation of wood by fungi and bacteria, has become more and more important during the last years. Wood is the only renewable natural resource and raw material of man so that it must be preserved against unwanted deterioration. On the other hand, its natural decomposition does not lead to any harmful products but only to carbondioxide and water. Both aspects have been dealt with in this volume.
