Paperback. Condición: Good. sop was probably a real person; although it is impossible to be sure which of the surviving stories were really his. The date given him by Herodotus is about 570 b.c., and there is nothing to make this date improbable. Other ancient sources include Aristotle and Plutarch, who has him dining with the Seven Sages of Greece and sitting beside his friend Solon, whom he had met in Sardis. The earliest known writings appear from the first century a.d. Later, stories of this kind, especially animal stories, were all ascribed to sop, and the Greek collection which goes under his name contains stories of many ages. A number of sop's fables are found in India, and it is not certain where they were first told. Sir Roger L'Estrange, the translator of the present book, was born in 1616 and died in 1704. He was a staunch Royalist, an author and pamphleteer, and Member of Parliament for Winchester from 1685 to 1689. He fought on the Royalist side in the English Civil War and was sentenced to death as a spy, spending four years in Newgate gaol, from which he escaped. During the Commonwealth he lived abroad, in Holland, returning to England at the Restoration to become Licenser of the Press (1663), in which role he was charged with the prevention of sedition and authorised to search the premises of printers and booksellers on the merest suspicion of dissension. L'Estrange excelled at his office. Hunting down and suppressing hidden presses and seizing seditious books or pamphlets, he become known as the Bloodhound of the Press. He published a great many books himself, besides pamphlets and other ephemeral works. He translated Josephus, Cicero on Friendship, Quevedo's Visions, Senneca the Younger's Morals, and other works. His sop, which includes fables drawn from other sources, was published in 1692, and has been often re-published through the years, his easy and vigorous colloquial style being well-suited to the subject. …

Paperback. Condición: Good. A collection of charming and enduring stories that convey morals to young and old alike. Aesop was a slave and storyteller who lived in ancient Greece around 620-564 BCE. No writings by him exist (if they ever existed at all), yet numerous stories and tales have been credited to him and have been shared through oral tradition throughout the world.  Many of these use animals as the main characters to convey deeper meanings and morals that have become ingrained in our cultural--and personal--belief systems. For example, in "The Goatherd and the Goat" we learn that there is no use trying to hide what can't be hidden. In "The Ass and the Purchaser" we find that people are known by the company they keep. In "The Boys and the Frogs," one person's pleasure may be another person's pain. "The Dogs and the Fox" show how easy it is to kick a man when he's down. And misery loves company, as we see in "The Fox Without a Tail." Aesop's Fables has been one of the world's most charming collections of stories that have influenced thousands of other literary works.   About the Word Cloud Classics series: Classic works of literature with a clean, modern aesthetic! Hardback. Condición: Good. An illustrated adaptation of twelve animal fables first told by the Greek slave Aesop.

Condición: Good. This exclusive Signet Classic edition contains 203 of Aesop's most enduring and popular fables, translated into readable, modern American English and beautifully illustrated with classic woodcuts by the great French artist J. J. Grandville. It is both amazing and wonderful that so much of the richness of our language and our moral education still owes a huge debt to a Greek slave who was executed more than two thousand years ago. Yet "sour grapes," "crying 'wolf,'" "actions speak louder than words," "honesty is the best policy," and literally hundreds of other metaphors, axioms, and ideas that are now woven into the very fabric of Western culture all came from Aesop's Fables. An extraordinary storyteller who used cunning foxes, surly dogs, clever mice, fearsome lions, and foolish humans to describe the reality of a harsh world, Aesop created narratives that are appealing, funny, politically astute, and profoundly true. And Aesop's truth-often summed up in the pithy "moral of the story"-retains an awesome power to affect us, reaching us through both our intellects and our hearts. Including: "The Fox and the Grapes" "The Ants and the Grasshopper" "The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse" .and 200 Other Famous Fables Edited and with an Afterword by Jack Zipes With an Introduction by Sam Pickering.…
