Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 979-8-950350-07-8 'Don't Look / Can't Look' by Kevin P. Wallace is a harrowing, visceral memoir presented as a fusion of photography and poetry. The book chronicles Wallace's journey from an innocent, optimistic 15-year-old discovering photography to a combat veteran suffering from severe PTSD following multiple deployments to Afghanistan. The narrative is fragmented but powerful, moving from peaceful childhood memories to the brutal realities of war. What makes this book unique is its raw format: photographs are paired directly with poems, creating a constant interplay between what is seen and what is internalized. Wallace captures heartbreaking scenes-Afghan children, like the young girl whose eyes he later ripped out of a print to represent her impending forced marriage, and a toddler whose arm was boiled by his father as punishment. He also captures intense combat action, including the detonation of a 2,000-pound bomb and the immediate moments before his own team is wounded by an RPG.The poetry matches the photos in intensity. Poems like 'A Blade of Grass' and 'The dancing boy' directly confront the horror of Bacha Bazi (the sexual abuse of young boys) and the deep-seated misogyny Wallace witnessed. A central theme is the profound moral injury and psychological cost of war. Wallace grapples with the irony of killing evil men to protect the innocent, only to feel his own soul become warped, blackened, and, upon returning home, incapable of being a loving husband or father.Ultimately, this book is a raw therapeutic document. It forces the reader to look at the untold psychological devastation of modern warfare-the trauma, guilt, and haunting memories that 'stomp with a monstrous foot' long after the deployment ends. It is a testament to resilience but also a stark warning about the invisible wounds carried home by soldiers.…
