Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - America's first modern culture war. A new party, a new frontier, and the ballot box as battleground. This pamphlet still bites hard. Written by Andrew H. Reeder, former governor of the Kansas Territory Free State struggle, The Election and the Candidates gathers a 19th century political pamphlet and republican campaign speech material from the 1856 presidential election: an urgent case in favour of the John C Fremont campaign and for electing Fremont and Dayton. Alongside the election argument sits the southern poor whites essay, a window into free-soil anti-slavery politics and the social arithmetic of slavery. Reeder writes as a witness to the Kansas crisis, where voting and violence strained the promise of popular sovereignty, and his prose is built for circulation and dispute. Read as an American history primary source, it captures early Republican Party history at the moment it was being invented - sharp rhetoric, practical strategy, and moral pressure. For political history research and anyone drawn to antebellum United States politics, it shows how Kansas, sectional conflict, and class were braided into national campaigning, and how language was used to make a coalition feel inevitable, with stakes that feel immediate. Casual readers will find it brisk, direct, and surprisingly contemporary; collectors will value a trustworthy full text edition of a pivotal document. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.…
