Mario Azevedo clarifies the role of ancient and modern strategies of organized violence and warfare in Chad, from both historic and contemporary perspectives. He combines written, primary and archival sources with secondary works, primarily in French and English, as well as oral data he collected during his visits to Chad in 1974, 1981, 1984 and 1995. Roots of Violence explores not only how violence has permeated Chad and become an almost intrinsic part of central-eastern Sudanic society, but also how foreign interference, from centuries ago to the present, has exacerbated rather than eased violence. Although Dr. Azevedo's main objective is to examine present-day Chad, this book also provides comprehensive and analytical discussion of Chad's violent past. In this way, the author goes beyond merely blaming the unwise ethnic policies of François Tombalbaye or Felix Malloum - thus demythologizing many assumptions held by scholars and non-scholars alike. Roots of Violence contributes to the growing literature on the roots of conflict and resolution in the region, and helps fill prevailing research gaps on Chad and Equatorial Africa.".
