The gears of the lathe machine are considered for the study to typically modify the present gear design to extract better improved results from the same gearbox. The gear design modifications such as inclusion of stress relieving features and mass reducing features are carried out using finite element analysis for improving the bending stresses, contact stresses as well as reducing the mass of the gears while keenly observing their effect on development of stresses in the gearing system. The analytical as well as finite element analysis results for bending stresses, contact stresses and mass reduction of the geometrically modified gear and present gear is presented with the comparative analysis among them.
