Beginnend mit den jüngsten Ergebnissen zur Zuzugsgeschichte des Niltals werden soziologische Ansätze, archäologische Berichte aus aktuellen Ausgrabungen und philologische Einzelstudien zu Personengruppen und Zeitepochen bis in das 15. Jh. hinein ausgeführt. Die Beiträge geben so einen Eindruck von den Möglichkeiten, die diese Region für eine moderne, epochenübergreifende Kulturgeschichte bietet. Sie gehen auf ein Internationales Symposium im September 2007 in Berlin zurück und wurden für die vorliegende Veröffentlichung aktualisiert.
