A step towards the classification of orthogonal decompositions of complex simple Lie algebras is done in Pham Huu Tiep's contribution. The subject of Klaus Hoechsmann's article is the arithmetic of commutative group rings, in particular the structure of the unit group of integral group rings of abelian groups of odd order. Horst-Günter Zimmer (* 30. Juni 1937 in Lübeck; gestorben 24. September 2016) war ein deutscher Mathematiker, der sich mit (algorithmischer) Zahlentheorie und Computeralgebra beschäftigte. Zimmer promovierte 1966 an der Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen bei Peter Roquette (Über eine quadratische Form auf der Gruppe der rationalen Punkte einer elliptischen Kurve über einem Funktionenkörper). Er war bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2002 Professor an der Universität des Saarlandes. Zimmer beschäftigte sich unter anderem mit Arithmetik elliptischer und hyperelliptischer Kurven mit Anwendungen in der Kryptographie. Seine Gruppe entwickelte das speziell für zahlentheoretische Anwendungen gedachte Computeralgebra-System SIMATH. Hans Julius Zassenhaus (* 28. Mai 1912 in Koblenz; gestorben 21. November 1991 in Columbus, Ohio) war ein deutscher Mathematiker, berühmt durch Arbeiten zur Algebra und als Pionier der Computeralgebra. Zassenhaus war Rheinländer aus Koblenz, die Familie zog aber 1916 nach Hamburg um. Seinen ursprünglichen Wunsch, Physiker zu werden, verwarf er und wurde stattdessen Student von Erich Hecke und Emil Artin in Hamburg, bei dem er 1934 seine Doktorarbeit mit dem Titel Kennzeichnung endlicher linearer Gruppen als Permutations-Gruppen schrieb. Darin führte er Permutationsgruppen ein, die "Zassenhaus-Gruppen", die eine wichtige Rolle in der späteren Klassifikation der endlichen einfachen Gruppen spielen (Arbeiten von Suzuki u. a.). Er entwickelte mehrere Algorithmen in der Algebra und der algebraischen Zahlentheorie (Berechnung von Klassengruppen, Galoisgruppen, Einheiten u. a.). Nach ihm benannt wurde der Zassenhaus-Algorithmus zur Bestimmung von Schnitt- und Summenbasen von zwei Teilräumen in der Linearen Algebra.
