Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the history of highway development in New York State, specifically focusing on the revolutionary Highway Law of 1908. The author examines how this legislation marked a turning point in highway management, transitioning from a labor-based system to a money-based approach, and introducing a system of state and county aid for town highways. This shift reflects the broader societal and technological advancements of the early 20th century, as the need for efficient transportation infrastructure grew alongside the burgeoning automobile industry. The book explores the complex interplay between local control and state oversight, examining the creation of a state commission with the power to supervise and direct local officials, while preserving their authority over local conditions and funding. The author goes into detail about the various provisions of the law, including its impact on highway construction, maintenance, taxation, and bridge management, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of this pivotal moment in New York's highway history. The book ultimately sheds light on the intricate process of building a robust and effective transportation network for a rapidly developing state.
