This text proposes that morphological and physiological traits can be used to both outline an animalâs genealogy and describe how it has adapted to its current habitat. The author argues that morphological traits, which have been preserved by transmission through successive generations, and physiological characteristics, which have been developed to suit an animalâs environment, can be distinguished and differentiated. From there, the author uses examples to show how traits that have originated by adaptation, and thus were initially worthless for determining the afnities of animals, assume importance when used to compare the broader systematic scale. The author concludes that all parts of the animal body, previously regarded as morphological characters, must nevertheless have a certain functional value and physiological activity, arguing that these characters may determine the types of form in whole classes, orders, or families. This expansive work has had a far-reaching influence on modern zoology, helping to establish it as an equal to other sciences, and remains an important read for those seeking to understand the development of animals. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
