It considers the Great Hunger both as a historical moment that had a devastating and enduring impact on Ireland, and as a social, political, and demographic process that shaped the culture and people of both Ireland and North America. The chapters are grouped thematically into three parts. The first, Silence, takes as its point of departure the ways in which the Great Hunger created silences, both at the time of the Famine and in the subsequent historical memory of the Irish people. The second section, Memory, addresses the legacy of the Famine in the lives and work of the generation that lived through it and those who came after, both in Ireland and among the Irish Diaspora. David A. Valone specializes in the history of science and medicine in Britain and the United States in 19th and 20th century and has published work on the intellectual life of early 19th century Cambridge University, on British economic theory relating to Ireland, and on the history of in-vitro fertilization in the US. He also has a strong interest in aspects of American popular culture during the 20th century. Christine Kinealy is an Irish historian, author, and founding director of Ireland's Great Hunger Institute at Quinnipiac University. She is an authority on Irish history. Kinealy has lived in the United States since 2007. She was named "one of the most influential Irish Americans" in 2011 by Irish America magazine. In 1997, under Prime Minister Tony Blair, the British House of Parliament invited her to speak about The Great Hunger. She did so in the place "where so many egregious relief policies had been made that resulted in so many tragic deaths."
